Another new member looking for a specific IP camera feature…

I need advice on choosing a 4mp IP Turret Camera that has the capability of “object size detection filtering”. I recently purchased a Hikvision IP turret camera that allowed the maximum and minimum size of detected objects to be defined, I am thinking that with this capability I might minimize the number of stored videos that were triggered by snow, leaves & insects. I coined the term “object size detection filtering” so don’t feel bad if it does not sound familiar.

I was not aware that this feature is an option in the low cost security camera market until I attempted to configure a Hikvision camera with AcuSense, unfortunately I had problems (may have been my learning curve?) and requested tech support from Hikvision and was told they will not support any camera that was not purchased from an authorized dealer, I bought mine on Amazon, ZERO authorized Hikvision dealers on Amazon. Today I sent it back for a full refund and am now thinking that I like the idea of having the capability of controlling what size objects can trigger a recording.
Another unsure finding about Hikvision is that they do not appear to be using an industry standard H.264 encoder? but no answers from Hikvision.

I am sum what of an IP camera novice, I have 4 POE cameras installed (2 Amcrest & 2 Trendnet) but the Trendnet cameras are 8 years old and are starting to become unreliable, I use Synology Surveillance Station on two different NAS boxes when I need time line based summary or need for remote monitoring and management.

My question is…
What other IP camera manufactures offer this type of a feature?
My budget range is up to $130 dollars as this application is primarily for visitor, package delivery & wildlife (not bees) detection, we are lucky as our neighborhood currently is a low crime area.
I may end up re-purchasing the same Hikvision camera (DS-2CD2343G2-IU) for $25 more but now I am interested in my options.

Thanks for any advice you might have!

Welcome,

You are going about it all wrong.

Using a camera with a min object size is a recipe for triggers for snow, leaves, cloud shadows, etc. as that is old school motion detection.

If you don't want false triggers, you need a camera with AI.

And yes the better cameras like Hikvision and Dahua are not going to answer your calls for support because you are not their intended market. That is what their respective Annke and Amcrest consumer lines are for, but you will find their 1-800 number is useless.

You had the right camera (although nobody would recommend that camera as it is not on the ideal MP/sensor ratio), but as many do, gave up too quickly and returned. Coming here first would have got you in the right direction with the camera in your hands.

Now with that said, while the camera you had was capable, many here do find that GUI tougher to navigate than a Dahua, but I have a few Hikvision cameras with their AI (they call AcuSense) and it works great with no false triggers, but it takes more steps to setup than a Dahua camera.

Many of us here by cameras from trusted member @EMPIRETECANDY here that sells international Dahua OEM on Amazon, direct, or his website.

See this thread on how using just Dahua AI may be sufficient for your needs (and other cameras with AI would perform similar) and guess what, we don't put in min size and leave it at 0,0 and let AI do its thing:

Who uses Dahua AI capable cameras? Reliable AI for triggering events? Pro's/con's?

The 54IR is a very capable camera and the most recommended camera here.

As far as cameras, without knowing what your goals of the camera is, this thread is used as the go to for the new person here outlining the commonly recommended cameras (along with Amazon links) based on distance to IDENTIFY that represent the overall best value/best bang for the buck in terms of price and performance day and night. It might be a 2MP camera in some instances.

The Importance of Focal Length over MP in camera selection

And coupled with that thread is this great thread which will show why all of the same 2.8 or 3.6mm cameras is the wrong choice:

We would encourage you to look at those threads in detail.

It will probably raise more questions than answers LOL.

Just add a little money IPC-T54IR-AS S3, it's using the animal detection special fw now, work great.

Thanks for your input, very insightful information...
I have yet to review any EmpireTech or Dahua cameras, the camera that I am replacing is an 8 year old 1.3mp with a 1/3" sized sensor and a 70° wide fov, I feel it provides enough
resolution for my application but the night vision is lacking and a problem I never completely resolved was fogging on the inside of the dome and now that it is failing its time to go.
Hopefully I end up with much better video quality with today's technology.
I am still very interested in having more control of object detection to avoid recording videos triggered by snow, leaves & insects while still capturing the stuff that is important.
Hikvision still has some nice candidate cameras but If the camera I tested was an authentic Hikvision camera I am concerned about Hikvisions mp4 files as they do not play well with
the VLC video player and in the windows file browser the file length information is not available.
I will spend some time looking around and focus on MP/sensor ratio, lens size and AI capability.

Thanks!

We assure you, the AI of these cameras give you very good control over not triggering for snow, leaves, insects, etc.

I get maybe 2 false triggers over a year total with all my cams.

Here was a freaking heavy snowstorm and the only time my cameras triggered was when a person was out there

If triggering for humans and vehicles (and animal with the model mentioned above) is what is important to you, then an AI camera is the camera you need.

See this thread of animal captures.
