Lots of folks here use asus routers for the built in open vpn and frequent firmware updates. Asus allows you to create a mesh network with two or more of their routers.

Been working great for me. I have my two routers connected over older Powerline adapters.

I have aimesh setup on mine with a 86 as the main and a older 68. Works ok, its connected by wifi except i thought i would only see one ssid name , but im showing the name from both routers Mine all use the same name but i see two wireless networks and the signals are differant telling me im picking up both routers.
