Was going to backup my firmware/MTD's of my 3 cams and nvr before i try to tftp update them since normal firmware update don't work.
but backing up doesn't work. using putty to ssh to the cam.
root doesn't work with any password
login with admin and my password.
cd command "not supported"
getting the ftpd running, it says not support 1
cat not supported

Any hints on what to do?

If the cameras / NVR firmware is new enough to have the 'Busybox psh Protect Shell' instead of the original (but still somewhat limited) Busybox shell then the restricted commands available no longer allow you access to the flash memory to backup the current state.

What Alistair is telling you, your Camera's have a 5.30 or above firmware leave them alone!! don't play with them or you may regret it.

5.3.3 on cams and 3.3.4 on nvr. the reason i wanted to change firmware was that one cam have the blink issue, but it seems to have gone when i view it trough the nvr.
So i'll leave my firmwares alone for now.
thanks guys for helping
