For a number of months, I was running a Dell Optiplex 9020 MT i7-4770 (mid-size tower) in my setup. I needed to save real estate where I could so purchased a 8mb ram 9020 USFF (ultra small form factor). Silly me...didn't read specs as the USFF has no 3.5" HD bay and a slightly less powered CPU i7-4770S Tried out a $20 Amazon External USB 3.0 and it worked AOK (for the 2 weeks I tried) but CPU was up around 55-60. I then purchased a 2 bay Synology NAS (for reasons other than Blue Iris). Also, 8 more MB of RAM for the USFF. Gots the NAS #2 bay filled with my WD Purple and now a total of 16mb RAM.
What do you know... 35-40% CPU usage now.
I am running: 8 x 2MP, 2 x 4MP, and 2 x 8MP Dahua cams (5500 kB/s and 622 MP/s).
Not sure what caused the drastic drop in CPU usage. I'm using the same Blue Iris configuration before and after. Only thing that changed was External USB -> NAS and 8mb RAM -> 16mb.
Just thought I'd share some results.

I have had a similar experience last year. I added memory moving from 8GB to 16GB, I just had the memory laying around from another build. The BI CPU utilization dropped between 10% and 15%. This was on an old windows 7 system. Strange I can not explain it ?

Same here, Optiplex i7-7700, went from 8gb to 16gb, Cpu useage dropped around 10%, If i recall.
But the biggy was that the GPU went from 20-25% down to 8-10%.
And the power draw from the wall dropped around 10watts.
