Hello all,

I'm a long time stalker of the forum. I live a the end of a Cul De Sac and am in a perfect position to catch any plates that come down my streed.

I currently have a IPC-HFW5231E-Z(http://www.dahuasecurity.com/products/productDetail/3741) pointed down the street. It does not pick up plates at any reasonable distance.

The attached snapshot is a car that was involved in an armed home intrusion down the street from me. I feel useless not being able to provide plate information of a vehicle so close to my house.

Any suggestions?

There's a subforum dedicated to ALPR that you should really look at.
LPR

A dedicated camera is generally required to capture plates at night as is lots or IR illumination and running the camera in B&W at night. A camera used for LPR needs to be set to a high shutter speed so that the plate isn't completely washed out. It is also necessary to ZOOM in so that the height of license plate is roughly at least 80 pixels, your image is a paltry 15 pixels.

You should really revisit some of the threads you've read in the past now that you'll be able to see images attached to them.

Can you make out the plate numbers during the day? I have the same camera at the end of a culdesac and I can read tags easily. You probably need to zoom the camera in some where the culdesac meets the road. Also your settings for night will need to be configured specifically to read plates. I am using 1/2000 shutter and it works pretty well.

Welcome Cade,

Definitely zoom in, look at tuning the camera for low light LPR, check out the threads looney2ns and tangent mentions, and come back and share your results with us.

Note, you may want to get a 2nd camera for LPR duty as noted.

Haha...obviously shows how much of a newb I am. I thought that LPR was another brand of camera. I will dive into the subforum and attempt some recommended setting changes(Hopefully I can obtain decent results without having to purchase a dedicated camera).

When I found this forum ~1 year ago, I had a Lorex system ordered...this forum prompted me to send it back before I opened it and make my own system. I definitely appreciate y'alls expertise.

I will post some results as soon as I get a day off to play and test settings!
