I have a Chinese edition camera. Firmware on the unit is v5.2.5. I saw there is a v 5.3, but people seem to be downgrading. I read about v 5.3.3 but haven't seen a Chinese version available for download. Anyone have a link? I've been using google translate to navigate around the hik vision interface. It seems it's getting harder to hack the hikvision accept different region firmware?

tell me what your firmware is not doing compared to newer firmware? Nothing Better. Don't crash your camera because you think it might be better firmware. Read the forums of locked up firmware upgrades. Then decide if you need one too. Just read and enjoy your camera as is. NO REASON TO UPDATE. NONE. One post says a lot. READ!

Sounds like full Chinese menus, that would be a good reason to change.

What firmware version and manufacturing date is shown on the label on the camera? That will determine the upgrade / downgrade options to make the camera more usable.
