Here are my goals;

Detect cars and flag them as cars
Detect people and flag them as people
Detect line crossing
Detect packages added/removed from front door
LPR (long term goal)
Possibly detect a parked car where one shouldn't be parked

I'm already doing continuous recording, but I'd like the ability to sort video clips by type, like human or packages, etc.

At some point I need to set up SMS and email alerts.

My initial thinking was to have the cameras do as much of this processing as possible since they are probably more efficient, having hardware dedicated to these functions. I get the feeling BI is going to do a better job though and I should just skip this experiment of tweaking each cameras motion detection settings.

What I really need is to find the time to RTFM for BI.

See this thread.

As of right now, an NVR is better at being able to search by those categories. But there are workarounds in BI.

It will come down to how important is it to search by vehicle or by person.

If you spend the time to dial in your settings and not try to do too much with one camera, many can find that the need to search by human or by vehicle is just another step that delays scrubbing video.

But in some instances it might be important to be able to search by that as well. Comes down to intended use.

GAME CHANGER!!!!

One of the great things about BI is it is constantly getting improvements.

And just like that, BI 5.5.6.8 now has the ability to search by your Deepstack items! It will not work for items identified prior to the update though, but moving forward it does.

Sooo, I take it there was no previous feature to sort by alert type?

Dahua advertises the ability to detect vehicles and people, but apparently that doesn't mean the ability to discern between them.

That is correct. Previously you could only filter out the DeepStack alerts based on confirmed or not.

The Dahua NVR allows you to filter/search by vehicle or person categories.

Ah, so the cameras can't report back to BI the alert type?

I suspected camera detection was going to be a fool's errand.

At this time no, it simply triggers based on the ONVIF.

So right now, if it is critical to have the designation of human or vehicle, then you would throw DeepStack on it after the camera trigger.

But BI is always updating, so it could happen soon!
