BI Setup between two homes

Hello, I have tried finding my answers in the FAQ and forums but I wanted to confirm with other people before I buy BI. Here are my questions.


1) Am I able to connect cameras from two homes into one instance of BI? BI would be installed on the local LAN in one home and then access to the other home would be through ddns and port forwarding.


2) In the demo version I wasn't able to get a https connection working. Reading the forums i came across the use of stunnel. Is it correct to say that you can not connect directly to a camera via https with BI however you can setup stunnel to create an encrypted tunnel for traffic not on your lan.

1) yes you can however there would be a constant stream of traffic....if you have lots of cams, slow upload speed or a data cap this may be an issue
2) dont know...
 
Is there a best practise to do the 'two home' setup? Could you install BI in each home and have them link in some way?

You cant link them other than stream from one system to the other but you will have the same issues as stated...you will have to open them as separate servers on the mobile app...
Generally you would setup a separate system in each location.
 
2) Some time ago Blue Iris got the ability to connect to a camera with https. However this is almost exclusively used for jpeg and mjpeg streaming, and as such it is worthless with most cameras since they use the rtsp protocol for streaming h264, not http or https protocols. Stunnel is a 3rd party program and it would work equally well with the demo or the full version of Blue Iris. This is what you would need if you wanted to connect TO BLUE IRIS with an encrypted connection.

Do not even try to stream cameras continuously from one home to the other. Unless you have way above average internet speeds then you will have a bad time with it. It will wreck the internet performance at the place doing the sending if not also at the place doing the receiving. Besides, it would almost certainly be against the terms of service of both internet providers to stream continuously this way, so if they had a problem with it they would be well within their rights to shut you down.

If the two homes happen to have clear line of sight between each other, then you can set up an inexpensive wireless bridge with Ubiquiti radios and stream as much camera video as you like that way. Even if the houses are miles apart, as long as there are no obstructions between them.
