Blue iris evaluation version

My investment has been about $900 ($30x2x15) for the software for two homes.

I’ve liked BI and it’s been the best solution over the years. This issue has pushed me to now use Frigate primarily and it has exceeded BI in some ways, but Frigate is still too complex to get setup for the average person. I’d like to keep using BI too. I like long goodbyes vs quick breakups :)

My clearly misunderstood point that started these replies was that folks were pointing some blame to users for this issue (allowed auto update, didn’t have redundancy, etc). I was responding to these points.

My response is that BI handled and continues to handle it poorly. That I can see, their web page on the support section says nothing. How about a simple status banner? Both statements can be true at once: I am a blue iris fan and they’re handling it poorly. Why does this forum have to defend them so vigorously, I’m not clear?

You stated earlier you've been a BI user since 2007....that's great!

I'm amazed that you could use a product that long and have no issues that were severe enough to cause you to join IPCT until 6 days ago on July 9th and post (up to this point) all 6 of your posts regarding this issue?

So it was good for 16 years and now because of this incident BI has fallen out of your favor? I cannot think of any product or service of mine that worked satisfactorily or without an issue for that length of time.

If you're that blessed and/or lucky, I'd take a big wad of cash and head for the closest gaming casino.

EDIT: I was wrong; turns out that our Whirlpool 22 cu. ft. 'fridge is 17 years old but the ice maker went out earlier this year....:idk:

You have just outed yourself as a fraud and liar. You have not used BI for 15 years. It was only in the last few years that BI enforced the support plan to keep getting updates.
Even if we accept your lie, you dont have a 900 dollar investment in BI. The support for one year is just the support for one year - you received those services. You spent 30 bux on the BI 5 update and used that for FOUR YEARS since about april 2019. At most you have the 60 bux total for both houses invested in BI.

Why in the world would you keep using BI if firgate does everything you need and is so great? Why would you pay for something that is available for free? particularly if you are not satisfied with the way BI is handling things?

Sorry, but those comments were not "pointing blame". It was merely folks trying to figure out why some had the issue while others did not. They were posing ideas, not pointing blame.

Some did say should have disabled auto updates but I posted to say as far as I knew BI does check regardless so probably wouldn’t have helped.

BI to their credit did restore the licensing server as soon as but from an old back which was missing recent licenses and that is what caused the bulk of the systems going into eval mode.

Will be interesting to see if there are any changes to their licensing model as a result of this, so for example let’s say Ken retires, nobody to hand the reins over to and all his servers shutdown?

This will be the case unless he completely removes the occasional validation requirement... Which is doubtful...
As had been mentioned earlier if that were the case somebody would probably develop a hack to get it working...
That said if this scenario keeps you up at night I would suggest moving to another VMS that doesn't have this requirement.
