Blue Iris webserver crashing. How to debug?

Anyone having this issue?

About two days ago, I noticed the webserver in Blue Iris has started crashing regularly, causing remote access (ui3, mobile app) to be unavailable.

The only way to remedy the problem is to restart the Blue Iris service. Afterward, the web server runs for a couple of minutes or in some cases, even a few hours, and crashes again. I thought it might have been a problem with the latest update (5.3.3.14), so I downgraded to several different versions, but the result still seems to be the same.

I have verified the BI webserver port is accessible (oddly, I can telnet to it, even after the webserver crashes) and no other recent configuration changes have been made to the server.

Any help or feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

EDIT: Forgot to add, all other functions (alerts, clip recording, motion detection) are working as normal. It's just the webserver that's crashing.

Update: This issue seems to be beyond BI.

Here are the things I've verified or tried so far:
  • Downgraded to several different versions of BI5, even known working copies
  • Switched ports. Same result (works for several minutes or even up to an hour, then BI webserver crashes)
  • Traffic served by BI is reasonable by disabling streaming clients
  • Memory and CPU are at reasonable utilization (avg load is 35% and 25% respectively)
  • This machine (Haswell I5 with 32GB memory) has been reliably hosting BI for several years now and hasn't gone through any recent windows updates
  • Neither access logs nor bandwidth logs show any unusual traffic
  • I've also emailed Ken, but no response yet since it's only been a day
Is there a way I can get a detailed debug log out of Blue Iris?
Hope someone might be able to give advice on how to debug this? Not having reliable remote access is a real killer.

Thanks!

I've run into this a couple times now--I believe both times the result of incremental upgrades to BI, though I haven't been able to confirm a cause yet. First time in late August, I ran into the behavior you describe.. the web server would stop accepting connections after an arbitrary amount of time, even though the port was still listening, and even locally from a browser running on the BI PC. A restart of BI would fix it temporarily. This persisted for a couple days and eventually a new version of BI was released and I upgraded and the problem went away. Figured it was resolved. I wish I could remember what versions were in play that time. Second time showed up about a week and a half ago. I had upgraded to 5.3.3.13 and the same behavior resulted. A single access via the iOS app would often cause the problem--particularly so if i tried to log off from the app rather than just swipe the app away. In all instances where this occurred, if I tried to view the 'connections' tab in the BI log viewer, BI would freeze and require me to End Task, though the log file provided no indication of anything going wrong. I rolled back to 5.3.2.11 and the web server has been behaving normally for over a week now, with many connections throughout each day. Really not sure what is going on here, but I have an email thread going with Ken to try to sort it out. Will let you know if he comes up with anything. In the meantime, you might try 5.3.2.11.

I'm tearing my hair out on this issue. Glad to at least hear i'm not going crazy!

You've PRECISELY described the issue I'm having (except I'm using web and android clients). Hopefully Ken might be able to dig up the cause. I'm extra surprised since I've been on BI since V3 and never seen a problem this hard to trace.

Will definitely try 5.3.2.11 and report back.

Thanks!

No luck. Installed 5.3.2.11 from scratch. Still exhibiting the same problems. Web server crashes just as frequently

What is the information in the Microsoft event viewer for the bi app at the time of the crash

Thanks @SouthernYankee

There aren't any at the time of webserver crash. For instance, it just crashed again within the last 5 minutes. However, the last BI related entry is from 35 minutes ago.
There are plenty of events for BI, but those mostly seem to be crashes related to restarting the service.

Here's one sample.
There is one anomaly which may or may not be related - there are lots of event viewer entries referencing different versions (5.3.3.8, 5.3.3.15) from the currently installed version which is 5.3.2.11

Hit it with a hammer time.
get you BI license key.

1) do a clean install of Windows 10 use "microsoft media creation tool"
2) do clean install of BI
3) DO NOT INSTALL any other software.
3) manually add one camera and verify that the web interface works.
4) manual added each camera testing in between each add.

DO NOT try to import your BI cameras settings, add them manually

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of.... that's my last resort option, but of course I prefer to avoid that if there are other viable alternatives.

you could have a bad DLL or a mismatch file. It is next to impossible to locate this type of problem.

@silencery Here's some interesting new data that I found this morning. I tried to make a connection this morning and it was refused again, after nearly 2 weeks without issue. Late yesterday, I logged into the BI workstation locally for the first time in 2 weeks. I didn't even interact with the app, but just logged in, locked it back up and left (I was changing the keyboard). Anyway, after this event, the webserver stopped accepting connections remotely. Interestingly, i found in the BI log that there were 2 entries associated with that local login--"display change" and "remote session end". I usually use RDP when I need to access the BI workstation, so I logged into the BI workstation remotely and all of a sudden remote connectivity was possible again (without restarting BI or anything else). I noted in the log "display change" and "remote session begin". After accessing via RDP, i was able to look at the 'connections' tab in BI that usually causes the freeze when this issue is occurring and it was filled with a couple dozen entries associated with my iPhone trying to connect during the "connection refused" time. Usually there is only a single row for each IP/device in this log. Seems like there could be something going on here between RDP and the BI webserver. Not sure if any of this applies to you at all, but it would be interesting to know if making an RDP connection has any bearing on your problem or if we are chasing two different issues.

@kcorbin Huh. Interesting indeed. Thanks for the update.

I did notice my logs showed similar messages about display change, but I don't know if it's the cause or related in any other way.

Yes, this is a headless server, so most of the time it's accessed via RDP. I'll have to see if I might find any commonalities.

If I can't find a resolution soon, I'm just going to blow up the install and start over again as @SouthernYankee suggested.

I'm having this exact problem and I was wondering if you ever had any luck figuring out what th problem was?
Edit - I was also experiancing a crash of my HDMI sound driver and found that it was BI that was causing that too. I rolled back the BI version and things appar to be working normally again.
