Simple math, if the MTBF of a drive is 1 million hours, then 10 drives of the same type have an MTBF of 100,000 hours. You also have the failure of the more complex controller, the memory in the controller and it goes on and on...
Short story , in the beginning of PC with 10 MByte drives the MTBF of the drive was about 1 year. At the company i work at we had 5+ PC failing just about every day. Nice hardware staff to keep it running.
