Using an older sff for blue iris right now. Would like to upgrade to more storage and cpu. I have a 6700k for my main system with a full size mobo , atx. Was thinking of buying an I7 9700k and atx mobo and place my old mobo and cpu in another case.

Other option is to buy an i5 9600k and mini itx board and put it in a tiny PC that has more hard drive spots.

What you guys think? Think the 9600k would be okay for about 12 cameras ranging from 2mp.to 4k?

Picking it all up at the Mecca land Microcenter

way more PC then you need. Look at ebay for a used business tower running i5-8400 2.8GHZ, this is also more than you need. Then add an SSD (OS BI) and a few purple WD drives for video.

Building a bigger system then you need is a waste of power, heat and money.

Calculate your max MP/SEC. Then check

Ya but newer PC's use a bit less power. I'll calculate it tonight. I'm at nearly 90 percent CPU usage now

I'm looking at about 400 for a brand new system which is about same price as the used ones that I see

Okay so rebooted computer and optimized it with the Intel encode and direct to disc and I'm down to 36% on it with 7 cameras. Planning on adding another 5 so I should be okay with what I have but I got to figure out my disk space issue.

Running an external drive as my storage and I would like more space and something I won't have to worry about falling off my desk .

We will see , like I said probably about $400 to $450 for a cpu mobo ram and power supply, maybe a new case if I find something I like

That is not a big enough budget. You would be lucky to get an i5-9600K and motherboard and RAM for that, not including a power supply (which is one thing you don't want to buy too cheap) or case or storage device or Windows license. And besides, i5-9600K is barely above i7-6700K in performance, so why spend all that on a small upgrade?

I would get at least a WD purple drive mounted internally. An external drive is not built to take continuous writing. As I recommended before An SSD for the OS and BI. If there is no space in the current case then if possible remove the CD rom. Or get a new case.

Or is your current BI machine not the i7-6700K? I am not sure I understand your plan.

If you are building a new system NOT for Blue Iris then I think you should be buying a Ryzen 3000 series processor instead of Intel.

You can get cheap SSD adapters for most CD drives in SFF cases. That is where you swap the CD drive with a fake one that has a slot inside for your SSD. Necessary because the power adapter for those CD drives is not standard for SATA, so the adapter fixes that while keeping the front of your PC looking normal.

Sorry bp2008 for the confusion. Currently using a 4570s as my blue iris in a sff hp PC. It isn't bad but need more internal drive space since it only has one port and slot.

For my main purpose PC aka workstation im using a Intel 6700k. If I upgrade mine I can repurpose the mobo ram and cpu in the blue iris /file server

I'm leaning towards an I7 9700k if I do that or a 3600 but not sure if the 3600 would be much more of an upgrade. I don't game a lot and dont do many intensive things with it. I really wanted the 3900x but don't know if I could justify it lol.

I'd like a mini itx board for the blue iris server /file backup because I don't want a huge case in my office but if I have to then I have to

Okay so it's $552 for 16 gb ddr4, 650 power supply , i5 9600k and z390 motherboard. I can get a cheaper mobo but has less options.

@pal251 well I'm betting a Ryzen 5 3600 build would be close to $100 cheaper then, and better. Although potentially complicated. X570 motherboards are expensive power hogs and while X370 and X470 boards work with 3000 series CPUs, they require a BIOS update. So you'd need to pick a board that has the ability to flash the BIOS from USB without a CPU installed.

You don't need a Z series motherboard for a Blue Iris machine.

Personally I'd do what your first suggestion is, repurpose your current workstation CPU and motherboard. The I7-6700k would be a great processor for Blue Iris, then you are spending money on upgrading your main workstation PC. What are you doing on your main PC? Gaming, work?
