Looking for a bullet camera to go near road where driveway comes out. Would like great detail and maybe the possibility of being able to read a tag although it would have to from an angle. Want night vision, possibly color night vision.

Another location I'd like a couple of dome or mini dome cameras to go under a covered porch. Both with night vision, one for up close on porch, the other looking up a drive for several hundred feet.

I'd like as small as practical for what I need it to do.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Welcome @lane

Do check out the LPR section and see what others have been using as there are a number of options. Most are probably using Dahua OEM 2MP starlight cameras in one form or another.

Ditch the bullet idea. Stick to turrets, not domes, specifically Dahua 42xx or 52xx series. LPR is an art and requires a dedicated camera, or two, that will be configured, specifically, for that purpose. Don't believe what you see in movies and on TV.

I did get a quote for a 2mp starlight but wanted to look at other options and was thinking I might want higher resolution.
Why a turret over a bullet? Can you mount a turret to a post and it be weather proof? Also do most Poe cameras have built in audio?

Bullets are prone to insect problems, spiders build their webs right in front of the lens. When the IR comes on you've got a mess in front of the lens that triggers the camera with the slightest breeze. Another problem with them can be reflections of the IR lights into the lens of the camera. Dahua seems to do a good job of eliminating that though. I have a 2231R-ZS, 5231 without audio or the number of streams available, mounted on a tree using the appropriate weatherproof box. It's been up for over six months with no problem. There are also specific pole mounts for them.

The problem with higher megapixels means that there is less light per pixel when compared to a 2MP. That results in reduced low light, night, vision. There are some higher res Starvis/Starlight models on the horizon, but the cost is going to be higher because they will probably use a significantly larger sensor to gather enough light at the higher resolutions.

Generally the 52xx and 42xx series have built-in audio, an onboard mic. The 2231 I'm using doesn't have one but uses the same sensor and electronics as the 5231 series.

Thanks for the link but that's beyond what I think I'm willing to read. Someone could spend a college semester reading that.

So, I took some advice and ordered a 4k turret for at the road and ordered a 2mp starlight mini dome with ir and ptz for the front porch.

Will look at adding another on the porch looking up the driveway, either a dome or turret.

I may add another mini dome with ptz and IR at the gate.

Just want to get system up and not go to deep until I have some time to evaluate.

Hi @lane

The cliff notes represent a significant resource which has been assembled from the vast amounts of information shared here. It is designed as a guide to get you results in a fairly systematic way.

Not hardly.
Yet, you could very well spend about the same amount of time asking questions here, then waiting for replies, that have already been answered in the cliff notes and here on the boards 100's of times. So you expect us to expend our time on you, when you aren't willing to spend anytime educating yourself on the subject.
You are already headed off to an ill informed start.
I'm out.
