I don't have a NVR. I have DS-2CD2032F-IW . I'm having trouble with micro-sds. I have Tp-link VR900 modem/router. Can I record to the HDD which is plugged to the USB port on the router?

But, depending on the firmware version in the camera, there may be a maximum volume size (not free space) above which the NetHDD will not 'format' successfully.
For version 5.2.5 that maximum volume size is a little over 200GB.

I didn't know that :( Is buying NVR is the only way to record more than micro-sd?

Or can I upgrade the aliexpress version of the cam?

It does work ok, it just has a limitation that needs to be handled.
The Mini-NVR facilities in the camera are quite usable, in my view.

I feel like a saw a patch for this at some point. Do you know about it?

I believe there was a patch, but it's not something I've explored.
I think the newer firmware (not sure which though) has less of a restriction.
