I have all of my 5231-ZE cameras set to use the attached Video settings. I'm not worried about storage space, so I'm curious if others have been able to tell a difference in video quality between the two in either Day or Night mode. If yes, then I'm going to up my bitrate and give it a try. Thanks!

I have noticed that with the new software I have that when I change the frame rate the software automatically changes the I-frame interval to double what the frame rate is. Of course one can manually change it. However I have left mine at the double rate.
Longer i-frame intervals give you more efficient compression 
There certainly are diminishing returns when increasing the bit rate to ever-higher values, however the differences are there. It is especially noticeable when you digitally zoom in on something, especially something with high detail like a pine tree. It will also help retain good quality if there are large changes in the scene.

I'm on an i7-4790 running H.265 on BI version 5.2.1.1.
I had HA set to default on my cameras, but I just noticed that the cameras that are running H.265 do not have the # next to them on the status, so BI must have changed those individual camera settings to no instead of default at some point...
But I was fairly certain most of my cameras had the # in a previous version. Hmm...but it all does start to run together at some point.
So I guess I can run H.265, not just HA since I am on a 4th generation?
I had noticed my CPU usage had jumped from the mid 30% to low 50% and just assumed it was an update to BI or my changing some bitrates and resolutions of some cameras, but maybe it was HA got turned off when I went to H.265? I hadn't really investigated the increase yet as it didn't seem to be a problem.
So if I cannot run HA with H.265, should I go back to H.264? I hadn't really noticed an appreciable improvement in storage, but that is probably because I kept the bitrates the same?

Are you suggesting I update to 5.2.5.8? It seems people have been having issues? Will that improve my situation?

That is correct. h265 support has been available for years. Its just that HA that was recently added for 265 and is only supported on the 6th gen processors. If you have the cpu headroom in theory you can reduce your max bitrates and use 265 resulting in significantly less storage space used.

See of you could notice any difference at the default. In theory with h265 you should be able to halve your 264 bitrate and keep the same quality. In practice it may differ.

HA is hardware acceleration, do you use the sub streams, mine are disabled in the cam itself.

Whether to turn it off or not is up to you and your application. I do not use Dahua VMS, so I turned off the substream - it saves bandwidth and camera CPU not having to process it. I have my viewing platforms send me the mainstream video.
The HA is in Blue Iris, so if you are not using that, it doesn't apply.
Turning off the sub stream can save a little bit of CPU on the camera, making it potentially run a teeny tiny bit smoother and cooler. But it won't save bandwidth if you weren't using the sub stream anyway.
^That is true...I guess I noticed a difference because I was using substream and when I stopped, I did see a drop, not much, but I figured a little here and a little there adds up if not needed.

Windows Media Player is a piece of trash. Even on Windows 10 the latest and greatest media player from Microsoft can't play H.265 if you don't pay them a dollar for the codec licensing. Get a different player or have BI re-encode the export to H.264.
