I've offered to help a friend install a one-camera system at a parish school.

The plan is to have a wide lens camera capture events in the gym. The camera is to be live-viewed in a bar area across the hall on a large screen television. Some may want to burn a copy of a volleyball game or something at some point. The system would likely be turned off during periods of inactivity.

I have an IP camera already and can acquire an older computer. The computer will only be used for the camera and will not have an internet connection.

I'm interested in what software that is cheap or free, and if there are any required modifications to the computer.

FYI, at home I am using Blue Iris and built my own NVR from scratch, so I probably know just enough to get myself into trouble :)

most camera came with its own free software. for example, hikvision ivms4200 for pc. Dahua and axis...I forgot their name.

Welcome Bigzebra,

See that you're fairly new here so I wanted to welcome you and share some notes

It's easy to get swamped with information here, so I wanted to share some notes with you

Please check out @giomania 's notes:
Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

I have also made notes which are a summary of a lot of the reading I've been doing here,:
Looking for some advice and direction!

Have fun joining us here.

To be honest, I think a security camera isn't going to be the best tool for this purpose. It sounds more like you want broadcasting type of equipment. For something cheap, I think a Camcorder like this: Sony CX440 Handycam® with Exmor R® CMOS sensor

It will handle the recording on SD card, has wifi and streaming options (ustream), HDMI output. All by itself it can handle everything you need and do it better than a security camera and BI. All you need is a secure mount, or have a person with it while it's being used.
How can I record and save my live broadcast?

And my take away from your post, your parish school has a bar.
