hi
I plan to buy a 8 channel Dahua NVR, POE Network Switch and 8x POE IP Cams. On the NVR, I am also undecided whether to purchase a NVR with direct 8 POE ports, or to purchase a NVR without POE port + a POE network switch.

Which of the below connection methods is advisable? :
(1) router --- NVR with direct POE port --- IP Cam
(2) router --- NVR without POE port --- POE Switch --- IP Cam
(3) router --- NVR without POE port
└------ POE Switch --- IP Cam

  • Between (1) and (3), assuming I am buying an unmanaged POE network switch, will there be any difference in configuring the NVR? One has a direct POE port and one without.
  • Between (1) and (3), which one has better network performance?
regards, goois

(2) router --- NVR without POE port --- POE Switch --- IP Cam
This is invalid - unless the NVR has 2 LAN ports.

(1) router --- NVR with direct POE port --- IP Cam
This would be OK, though generally you'd want to avoid burdening the router with NVR Live View traffic just in case it degrades it's main task of routing, though NVR Live View traffic isn't as bad as the multi-camera video streams would be.

(3) router --- NVR without POE port
└------ POE Switch --- IP Cam
Not advisable just in case the router doesn't handle the video traffic without affecting the ability to handle it's routing task. On some routers this has been known to reduce the broadband download speed due to an overloaded router handling the router switch traffic.
Better to connect the NVR to a spare port on the PoE switch and not the router to avoid this.
