Newegg has two desktop server that would make a great NVR for BI or any other NVR software you want. Just add hard drives

HP ProLiant ML10 v2 Tower Server System i3-4150 3.5 GHz 4 GB RAM - $189

  • Intel Core i3-4150
  • 4 GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800E-11 Kit
  • 4 x LFF NHP Drive Cage
  • 350W Power Supply

Good for a couple cams, low wattage CPU:

Acer Desktop Computer Aspire TC ATC-705-UC52 Intel Core i7 4790 (3.6 GHz) 12 GB DDR3 1 TB HDD Windows 10 Home 64-Bit - $459

  • Intel Core i7 4790 (3.6 GHz)
  • 12 GB DDR3 1 TB HDD
  • Windows 10 Home 64-Bit
  • Intel HD Graphics 4600

Bigger system with more power and Intel HD graphics for hardware accelleration.

I think for the money, I'd go with some of those older model Dell 5500s w/dual Xeon 3.0 GHz CPUs and 24GB of RAM....powerful workhorses that can certainly handle a little video recording across HDDs....I found a couple on eBay in the $500-$600 range that had 1TB HDD and Win 7 Pro installed....wish I had the spare cash...I'd be all over at least one of them to take over what my NAS is now doing.

I mean, you'll have $500 bucks into one of those rigs real quick...or, I would. I like 4TB HDDs and redundancy.

Terrible idea. Those old servers a extreme power hogs and under powered compared to today's modern systems. Most importantly they dont support quicksync which is essential for blue iris hardware acceleration. A modern dell/hp haswel i7 will blow that server away (despite the dual processor) and sip power in comparison and come with a full 3 year next business day warranty for about 500 dollars. Heck a 300 dollar i5-4590 will perform better for blue iris than that old dell. Will save at least 100 -200 per year in energy costs.

Well, you would know better than I.

I've always built my own boxes. The idea of 2 XEONs, with the fail-safe factor, was appealing. And, how much power does one really need to handle video compression and storage? But, like I said, you would know better than I. Oh, I don't use Blue Iris either. I have Hikvision DVR and software.

But, that's why I come on this site. I learn tons of stuff from you guys. That's a great thing!
