Dahua owners - where do you do motion detection? In camera? Or in BI?

I'm still new to this and I was wondering where everyone does their motion detection? In the camera? Or in Blue Iris? I don't have much experience with either, so hoping to get some advice on what you've found most reliable.

I have a Dahua IPC-T5442TM-AS. The motion detect features seem very advance, but I have no context.

To be concise we have to differentiate between motion detection and IVS (tripwire, intrusion, etc). For motion detection, BI is hands down far superior. Answering as an amateur BI user, BI's motion detection is powerful enough to approach the capabilities of IVS. In some situations it might even be superior to IVS, but in others it won't. The big difference I see is that IVS setup is very fast and simple, while trying to mimic it in BI takes a bunch of trial-and-error tuning. The good news is that you will have the choice. You can start with IVS, and if BI motion detection might work better in your situation, you can transition to it after you become a more advanced user.

Also note that blue iris supports sentry AI human detection. It is cloud based, but only costs 50 for the year or 5 a month. It is very accurate and they are always improving. Video is not sent to the cloud, but rather still images upon trigger.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, I was kind of clumping IVS and Motion detection together, but interested in what works out where. As far as I know, IVS features on my IPC-T5442TM-AS is capable of face detection, trip wire, and people counting. My biggest gripe with IVS/Motion detection on the camera is that it doesn't have an easy way to integrate with something. Like I wish I could subcribe to the event from another system rather than start recording or something.

Face detection on dahua cameras is a gimmick

In BI can I see if alert is from Motion detector or Camera IVS ? I'm thinking to try that out

I do like it, but always keep exploring right ? :)
Already one benefit from this, I saw that all my algorithms are at Simple from v4, change to the new one.

This thread has already been very inform BI. I will be setting up IVS this week. When doing so I was planning on logging onto the camera that I want to set it up on through the web login and trying to set it up. Would this be the proper way, or should I login to the NVR and set it up from there?

I've tried both, the simplest way to setup is through the camera's UI for IVS. If camera comes without IVS, then BI should be your number one option. :)

You can.... IVS events are exposed through ONVIF PullPoint Subscriptions. There are threads about a few node.js (and other language) projects that let you subscribe to the vent from another system, but you have to code in what you want it to do.

Since BI can subscribe and alert on IVS, and BI lets you do just about anything as an alert action (i.e. call a custom executable, make a HTTP call, etc), that was easier for me.

Not totally sure if this what you mean, but on cameras where I have both BI motion detection and camera IVS enabled, the tag that BI puts on the clip is different. If the camera detected the motion, the tag shows "External". If BI detected the motion, the tag says "Motion". At least it does within BI on the computer. I don't see those tags when using UI3 or the iOS app but I may have something configured wonky on my end.
