Camera Plan.jpg

Good Afternoon everyone, Firstly thank you all for all of the many threads you have contributed to, which I have read, I started with almost zero CCTV knowledge but I have been lurking for quite a few weeks now, and have hopefully answered a few of my own more basic questions, and hopefully wont appear foolish in asking the following questions. I am in the UK FYI (re GDPR considerations etc).

Narrowing things down my 4 cameras so far depicted in this plan are all going to be dahua 5442's (1/1.8")in the 3.6mm focal length or similar, and provisionally mounted at 1.8m height. Budget is a factor, and dont really want to spend crazy money. it's likely Ill need to buy one or two cameras a month to build up to the optimum setup.

I do have an almost brand new POE Switch (8 Port Netgear GS308EPP) so have limited myself to a max of 7 cameras. I have a small home server cabinet I installed a few years ago, so am confident in wiring things up myself. Will run the system on a PC (Intel i5 Gen 6 with 16g ram and modest GFX card) Blue Iris Software and have not considered an NVR at present. I have a Qnap NAS but will likely need to upgrade both hardrives to ensure adequate capacity.

As you can see my front garden is almost non-existent so hopefully the two depicted should be enough? I should add there is (for simplicity's sake, a Eufy dual lens doorbell cam at the front door). One PIR floodlight is attached to the wooden side fence, and the porch light is also PIR activated, and is two standard up/down lighters. So light should not be an issue.

My rear garden is enclosed within a 6 foot high brick wall. As you can see the side gate is covered inside the identification zone. There is one PIR floodlight just below the soffit above the back door. The wooden gazebo is being puched back into the flowerbed in an upcoming project, so will be less of an obstruction than it is atm.

Q1 - is about the rear parking area. The foorprint of the 4 car bays cars is all my land, but anything beyond is communal driveway. I can mount anywhere on the white brick wall. I have a huge reel of outdoor shielded cat6. So please can you help with advice re covering this parking area?

Q2 - do you please have any feedback about the front & rear garden camera positions/heights/choices as depicted by the red dots in photos?

Q3 - any suggestions to cover the back of the garden, with additional cameras? Considering to add a TIOC camera of some description to allow for some lights/alarm sounds to deter an intruder.

Thank you for looking in and for any suggestions. I havent bought any cameras yet so am still open to all suggestions.

Welcome @Rooikat

I would pickup ONE varifocal 4MP 1/1.8" sensor IP PoE camera and start playing around with it. ( you will also need a small poe switch and length of cat5e / 6 cable )

I would also want to cover the car parking area, minimum 2 cameras one on each side of the wall pointing to the middle.
If you need to capture license places, then 2 more cameras.

Always nice to see when some one has taken the time and trouble to read existing posts in the forum, and done some thinking, before asking questions.

My one suggestion is to start with a dream master plan, which perhaps goes beyond what you think you will do.
Build infrastructure that has expansion potential.
Cams have a way of growing on you, especially as you understand them better which happens most when you are hands-on.
Start with one camera, and grow as appetite and support on the home front permit.

* this forum might give the impression you need lots of cameras, but that does not have to be the case
** some folks here have mastered the art of getting their significant other to want more cameras

Thanks guys. Not gonna lie I’m probably stuck with 6-7 cameras in total so a massive amount of cameras is unlikely. My wife is pretty much opposed to cctv full stop, so swinging in 2 front, 2/3 rear and 1/2 parking area is honestly my limit for the WAF. Budget also a bit of a factor. Do you have any specific advice re the parking area cameras?

Any driveway with cars parked overnight I have always used opposing cross-crossing cameras, probably 3.6mm fixed 5442s there.
Only concern there is getting them mounted out towards the edge enough so you can still see the car door on both ends
I would also look at the 3449 tioc Pro. Even better light pickup than the 5442 but the benefit of having the white LEDs come on with motion . In fact I would do these over the 5442s. Also much better microphones
