Entryway camera mounting question

rotating it will be better (like pictures earlier in the thread). less wall in the frame, less ir reflection, and a chance of seeing packages on the porch.

I'd probably use an HDBW4231F-AS "wedge" at the door as it's a little less in your face and save the 5231 for the driveway.

How does the mini-wedge compare to the 5231 for low light? I tested a 5231 at my front door at night with the IR disabled and the shutter speed set to 1/100. The porch area is lit by a 13w CFL bulb to camera left in the image below.

I just turned the camera, you mean like this? I will have to make the fine adjustments tomorrow. I was considering that camera, I will have to look into it. Thanks for your help!

Yeah I will be messing with it some more tonight once I am home and that was one thing I was going to adjust for sure.


Messed with the BLC settings some and got it looking better during the daytime I believe. Will have to wait until it’s sunny again but so far it’s already brighter where before it was dim. So I’m hoping that setting fixed it

While the 5231 will be better than the 42xx models, the mini-dome wedge does fairly well

The real question often is finding an appropriate balance between quality of image / video w/a small footprint / aesthetics.

I feel that the starlight mini-dome wedge is the first model to consider for adjacent to the front door placement as it strikes a very good balance.

Remember as the entry way typically has at least some light, you should be able to keep the camera in color mode in those situations.

You'll probably be disappointed with the 4mp cams. You also have to be careful to avoid china region cams that have been hacked to English.

In low light, the 2mp starlight really shines. In bright daylight there are some higher res cameras like the 4k (8mp) models that do very well. In a few months time we'll probably see a 4k cam that they brand as a starlight, but night performance won't be quite the same.

In an entryway, your subject is pretty close to the camera so I think you'll be happy with 2mp and don't need higher res.

Great, I will ask Andy what he has available in the 2MP version then and stay with starlight for now..
