I am running a USA version 4mp Hikvision dome purchased from a stable US vendor. I have intermittent white flashes and I am being told a firmware update is in order. This is one of 5 hikvision IP cameras being run through a hikvision 7608 NVR. Nothing complicated with the setup but I am stomped here.

I cannot update the firmware. I get a "update failed". Right now, my process is to log into the camera through the NVR and select the digicap.dav file that was downloaded from various hikvision sites, including a link to the re sellers site. Again, when I select update - it fails in a few minutes with the progress bar still at 0%.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

It sounds like you are using 'Virtual Host' to access the camera and try the update.
I'm unsure if you can do that - certainly I've never tried an update that way.
Maybe try connecting your PC or laptop to a spare NVR PoE port, change the IP address to, say, 192.168.254.100, connect to the camera IP 192.168.254.x address with the browser and try from there, bypassing the NVR.
If it's a US 2142, the 5.3.6 firmware is 5th down here: http://overseas.hikvision.com/us/download_89.html
and older 5.3.1 firmware 6th down here : http://overseas.hikvision.com/us/download_89_p3.html

I have done this several times in the past. It definitely does work... but when in doubt... do the below.

The camera is question is 192.168.254.1 I tried connecting a laptop to a spare POE port located at the rear of the 7608. I entered 192.168.254.1 in the laptop browser and it fails to connect. hikvision camera upload failure.JPG

What IP address did you set your laptop to when you tried to connect to 192.168.254.10 with the browser?
If you don't set the IP address to something in the same range, for example 192.168.254.100, you won't be able to connect.
You can check that all is working OK with the laptop connection to a PoE port by using SADP - it will show the cameras and the NVR.
