no...you dont want an low voltage processor...
Search the forum for optiplex and elitedesk...you can get an i5 haswell/skylake business system for 300...also consider a tower or elitedesk small formfactor which has room for a full 3.5 drive for local storage.

Thank you for the quick reply! I'll research your suggestions.

Possible a system could do double duty as a kodi server?

technically it can..but I always recommend any VMS be installed on a clean dedicated system....

Ok. The power company will love me.. I'm looking to future proof a bit. Running quality Cat6, going to buy a camera at a time, etc.

The recommended systems will allow me that or should I track down an i7?

How many cams do you plan on running? What resolution?
The modern i5 haswell/intel systems idle at 15-18w and use only 30w at about 30 percent cpu..

I don't know enough to tell you.

I was looking at an Amcrest package, 4MP.

Idea is home security, family safety and asset to community. Corner lot, all traffic passes by my abode. Love the PTZ, auto tracking business. Want to do LPR down the line. Only a few days storage. A tool to catch those doing bad in a do good zone.

Dont buy amcrest..they simply rebrand dahua cameras...you can buy better form factors like the turret design for less....amcrest is also the successor to foscam.us...they same company that left all its buyers holding the bag when they could not maintain their exclusive deal with foscam china...
The amcrests dont auto track...auto track is a gimmick anyways..
LPR does not need high res...just a good long lens..
Remember that generally with the same size sensor, 2mp will do better than 4mp at night...more megapixels does not mean better.

My few days on the forum learning as much as I can, I see my choices are opening up. Amcrest is not what I am looking for.

One camera at the door way, dome.

One camera up high Front and one in rear. Likely the PTZS types?

Another one up to overlook intersection, cars passing by.

Is there a place to discuss mointing locations, types, basically achieve a good security camera plan?

Its not bad but you can buy optiplex with a 3 year in home warranty and better build for less via the outlet or ebay..they were selling for 525 on ebay a few weeks back.
