Yes, 100ppf would give very good image quality for doing positive id of a face. And in your case, with small objects lobbed over a fence, good image quality sounds necessary.

One thing some people use is a vari-focal lens. During install, you adjust the focal length of the lens to get the best result. It makes it easier than buying the right size lens based on calculations and estimates. You can find several threads on this site where the varifocal cameras are discussed.

In your situation, where the exact mounting location may be determined by experimentation, a vari-focal may work nicely.

Yes vari-focal might be the answer too.

I'm going to get the local law enforcement up to look at it and see if there is any way that I can face the cameras side on to the fence as the fence is a long area to try and focus on small objects/faces ... :)
