Newbie here - great forum - I've been educating myself here all week. Can anyone share any guidance or experiences on finding a local installer for systems purchased here? I originally came to:
  • Do my own research for the best systems - not just limited to what the local company "X" carries
  • Avoid the sales pitch of companies wanting to bundle monitoring (not interested in monthly fees for monitoring)

I'm pretty tech saavy and have no issue with vpn/router config and otherwise setting the system up, but would rather leave the POE wire routing to a professional installer.

Many thanks!

Look for a "Low voltage cable installer" . Depending on your location and the complexity for the drops the cost can be between $50 and $150 per drop. Plan out the entire job before having anyone out.

Buy your own cameras and NVR or VMS. Make sure that they use pure copper AWG 23 or 24 wire for the network cables. No CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum), check the cable before they install, cut it your self, strip the wire, scrape the wire, look at the labels.

I would recommend that you get a variable focus good quality camera, build a test rig and check each the the planned camera locations at night with motion. Most newbies mount the cameras to high and do not have enough cameras for good detailed coverage. Soffit mounted cameras are ok for an over view but are useless for a detailed identification. The purpose of the cameras are to identify the bad guy, and have it stand up in court.

I have multiple cameras covering the front door, a door bell cam pointed out a camera pointing down at the package drop area, a camera pointed back at the front door, an inside camera point at the closed door.

The garage has Two cameras mounted outside no higher than the top of the door , one on each side, use a very tight focus 6mm, to catch the door checkers.

Do it right the first time saves money over having to do it twice.

8) More megapixel is not necessarily better.
13) use a test mount to verify the camera mount location. My test rig: rev.2
14) (Looney2ns)If you want to be able to ID faces, don't mount cams higher than 7ft. You want to know who did it, not just what happened.
18) Camera Sensor size, bigger is general better Sensor Size Chart
19) Camera lens size, a bigger number give more range but less field of view. Which Security Camera Lens Size Should I Buy?
20) verify your camera placement, have a friend wearing a hoodie, ball cap and sunglasses looking down approach the house, can you identify them at night ?

I'd say to look around for electricians that are familiar with low voltage wiring. Check them in BBB and maybe even call some individuals for references. From what I've seen here, $100-$200 per drop is the going rate depending on difficulty and going rates in your area. Make sure to have each drop as a double cable, just in case something goes wrong or you need another camera in the same location or close by.

Three rules
Rule #1 - Cameras multiply like rabbits.
Rule #2 - Cameras are more addictive than drugs.
Rule #3 - You never have enough cameras.
