Hey guys,

I would like to save my footage for longer time frames but that would mean more costs for upgrading the hard drive.

The easy way out seems to use h. 265 but I am uncertain if that would have notable impact on face detection (AI) or any detail loss that would have an effect human identification...

Can anyone shed a light on this?

It shouldn't have an impact from an AI standpoint. It comes down to not having too low of a bitrate that it degrades the video.

In most experiences, H265 versus H264 is not the drastic savings most expect. Mine was under 10%. As always, YMMV.

Most resources state something around 50% the bitrate in day time (2092 kbps H265 vs 4135 kbps H264) and about 30% at night time...
But theory is one thing, reality is another.

I record 24/7 in Blue Iris and have it cut to 4GB video files. It was literally within minutes between H265 versus H264. I was shocked based on what resources will state is the savings. Not enough to make a difference in most of my camera viewpoints. Compression is different and actually looked better in H264. Depends a lot on what the image is looking at. A lot of motion will provide smaller storage savings than a static. More one camera that sees mainly a static image saw improved savings, but again not enough to be like wow that is a savings.

Best thing to do is to test it for your location and see if it is worth the change, both from storage and performance.

The difference in h.264 and h.265 in the daytime outside is about 10 % for me. The wind blows the grass trees move, the clouds move, cars drive by. I am at 15fps and iframe of 15. VBR.

Buy a 4tb purp!e drive.
