Help with false motion detection due to ambient light changes

My most recent Hikvision install (DS-2CD2532F-IS) is triggering a lot of false motion detection events due to ambient light changes (sun and cloud transitions).
Is there any way to prevent these light-change based false positives but still be able to detect (pure) motion?


My motion detection sensitivity is set to the lowest setting (=20) but I get these events every time the light/hue/color changes in the covered area.
I tried setting it to 0 but then nothing gets recorded (even when someone stands in front of the camera) which I find strange, does sensitivity = 0 really mean no motion detection?


Attached are my settings and this link show a typical false-positive motion detected event.
You will notice (settings draw area) that I excluded the areas that have minor (but constant) motion like plants and pinwheels.

Hi @S474N I was thinking about it but was not able to figure out how to add multiple lines (the drop down on my line detection only shows "1").
Any idea how to add multiple lines to the line crossing detection?

BTW is there a way to figure out what "movement" triggered the motion detection? I checked the Enable Dynamic Analysis for Motion but I don't see any markings on the recordings triggered by the motion detection tab.
Edit: I found the additional setting I needed for the dynamic analysis in the help: "To mark the motion objects on the live video, go to Local Configuration> Live View Parameters and enable the Rules"

Move to the UK where the sun never shines so then you have no issue? :laugh: I kid, I kid.

Every camera I have ever tried will false to this if they are IP. Analogs do not have near the issue and they are almost immune to this. I will say that my Hikvision cameras false the least of any of my IP cameras. ACTi for example are falsing monsters and are horrible in comparison to the Hiks.

Is this on the camera, NVR, or iVMS?
 
This is the only reason I'm on 5.1.6 - multi-line crossing. I'm dreading that my new cameras (on the way) will not support 5.1.6.

I agree. Having only one line crossing is insufficient. Not only that they only allow only one area for intrusion detection which is also pretty limiting.

Sadly all my cameras came with post 5.1 firmware already installed :(

If your camera's are below 5.2.5 then you can downgrade back to 5.1.6 without any problems with a manufacturing date before 2015.

Thanks, sadly all my cameras are either V5.2.3 build 141024 or V5.2.5 build 141201, so I guess no downgrade for me... :sad2:

The 5.2.3 are good to downgrade without problems, it's the 5.2.5 are not going there anymore,

I got my DS-2CD2332-I from China about 2 weeks ago and i have exactly the same problem with motion detection and would like to use more than one line crossing layer.

Is there any tutorial how to downgrade to 5.1.6?

The firmware version is 5.2.0 build 140721.
 
Can you detail the specifics of the expert settings that we need to be setting? What's better on 5.2.0 vs. 5.1.6
 
For me I had issues with WDR and some other problems with 5.1.6


For the "Expert" motion detection you have far more configuration settings to play with.


8 configurable zones
Sensitivity scale from 1 to 100 in increments of 1 for each zone
Proportion scale from 1 to 100 for each zone
Separate sensitivity and proportion scales for day for each zone
Separate sensitivity and proportion scales for night for each zone


The proportion scale allows you to set a percentage of the zone created which must be filled and moving to cause a trigger e.g. if I create a rectangle and set the proportion to 50 then 50% of that zone must be moving to trigger an event and that's in addition to the sensitivity settings. So you could set it up so that a large dog will trigger it off but a small cat won't even with the sensitivity scale set up the same for both.


Give it a try for yourself. In the motion detection tab in events just above the cameras view window there is a configuration option with the default set to "Normal" click on the arrow for the drop down menu for "Expert".

This is in the camera's menus not NVR. If you set it up in the camera yet still have an NVR connected to it, directly plugged in or just attached to it on the network, at some point the NVR will override the settings back to normal motion detection again so it's best used for stand alone cameras recording to a NAS or on-board sd card.

Do you have "Enable Dynamic Analysis" on? If I'm covering a long driveway that can quickly go from full sun to shade, would you recommend doing several small areas vs. just a few large? I'll turn off plane traversal and give it a shot; I'd love to be able to go to 5.2.x but been tied down by the single plane on those versions. Do you tend to go more sensitive, less proportions at night?

Also, any idea how to get iVMS to show the motion detection areas? I have plane traversal areas showing (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/853747/Jing/2015-05-07_2107.png) but can't figure out how to get the motion detection areas to show when I move my cam to use that; otherwise I can't tell which area is triggering.

If you are happy with 5.1.6 then stick with it, it's just my opinion. I dropped back down to 5.1.4 and ran it for a long while because I was disappointed with 5.1.6 but eventually went to 5.2.0. Tried 5.2.3 but noticed a severe increase in lag on a 3mp cam.


I have Enable Dynamic Analysis off. I only use that when I'm installing a customer camera and use it just to see if normal motion detection is working.
For Expert I only ever use 1 zone and the proportion and sensitivity vary depending on where the camera is installed.


Here's how I set them up:


Start with the sensitivity at max 100 to make sure you get a trigger.
Setting the proportion varies depending on the size of zone created but I normally make the zone about twice the size of a person and start the proportion at around 20. Get a colleague or the customer to walk in the zone and if there is no trigger turn the proportion down by 1 then repeat the test until you get a trigger. If you get a trigger the first time around you should go the opposite way with the proportion scale until you don't cause a trigger and then set it down back by one. The idea is to find the exact sweet spot for proportion level to set off the trigger. (Note proportion may sometimes be right down to as low as 5 or less but it will depend on the size of the zone created).


Once you are happy with the proportion then you can set the sensitivity level. Generally down at around 10 will avoid cloud movement but this may depend on how aggressively the wind is blowing them. Either way do the same test again but with the sensitivity scale and start at around 20 and keep going down. The lower it is and can still set off an event the better. You will eventually find a sweet spot.
Generally I don't set up separate settings for day and night and leave that setting to off so that it serves both. But you may want to test it at night to see if it's to your satisfaction before adding different night and day settings.

I saw the recommendation to line detection, why not intrusion detection with selection area? Is this working?
