Serial TTL or serial RS232?
Do you have access to the serial console with it?
** Edit** Using RS232 on a serial TTL output or vice versa will generate garbage characters as in your screenshot.
What is the adaptor actually connected to (DB9 RS232 or serial TTL output) and what type of adapter is it?
