Trying to help my mom upgrade her system from another state so bear with me here.......
she has a system with 4 Hikvision DS-2CD2342WD-I cameras running to a DS-7608NI-EV2/8P NVR. Everything is running great, but due to some recent events in the neighborhood she wants to upgrade a couple of cameras. I need a camera that can grab a clear picture of a face at around 40 feet during the daytime that will work with the current system....also, can someone confirm what resolution the NVR is capable of? What we are seeing doesn't seem to be great, I think we may have a setting wrong. Thanks

I think that model number is in error - can you re-check it so the specs can be verified?

That's as much about the lens focal length selection as the camera resolution.
Here is some good advice on that topic :

And a bit of detail on the problems here will very likely generate some good advice.

OK - that's a model number that doesn't resolve in a simple Google search - but it's probably an E-series NVR.
The specs say 6MP max, so 4K cameras would not work well, plus its decoder for the VGA/HDMI output is limited to h.264 though the web GUI with webcomponents plugin (IE11) overcomes that and will handle h.265
You could still optimise useability by suitable choice of camera focal length, assuming the scene of interest isn't too wide.
