Hi.

Does Hikvision require some kind of browser plugin that can't be used on Linux?

Yes, 'Webcomponents.exe' is Windows-specific, works best in IE11, but there are some work-arounds on other browsers.
On Linux I have to resort to using a Windows VM for Live View and configuration. QuickTime can be used for Live View on some cameras, but not for configuration or NVRs.

With linux I use Pale Moon browser with VLC for live view & configuration. I have not discovered a way to get playback working in linux.
If I want to see playback I have to use a VM to run IE.
