Actually the shutter speed of 1/250 seems to work fine during the day too.

I now have one of these cameras in both the front of the house and the back of the house. During the day I zoomed in on a car parked up the street to see if I could read the license plate. Not only was I able to read the license plate but a van drove by while I was zoomed in and when I looked at the video later, frame by frame, I was able to read the plate of the van that was going about 25 mph.
You shouldn't need to change the setting. You shutter speed should be your minimum shutter speed. In daylight the camera will be free to adjust the shutter speed to the available light
2mp with a 50mm lens for under US$150? You bet! The glass alone on my plate cam cost more than that. Will probably need more IR in a lot of applications to run high enough shutter speed to eliminate motion blur. I run 1/1000 on mine. I started at 1/500 but motion blur on the plates was a bit of an issue.
Edit: - You would have to run it in manual focus in that application though. You couldn't let the auto focus make the decisions lest it focus on the far scene and give you blurry plate pictures.

These mini-bullet cameras are great during the day with the default setting for reading plates. To read license plates at night without external lighting the shutter speed needs to be set at 250 or maybe higher. Thanks to SyconsciousAu for that info. Only problem is when you set the shutter speed that high, you can't see much of anything else, like people or critters walking down the street. Maybe one mini-bullet for reading license plates and another for capturing everything else might be the best way to go?
Looks like you are in a good position generally. Your camera is almost perpendicular to the plate.
The street runs north and south. I can pick up the license plates by either pointing the camera to the north or to the south. The garage where the camera is mounted is just a few yards from the street, which does help. There's only a few cars that drive by here at night though. Most cars in this neighborhood drive 10 to 20 mph, so guess that helps too.
Yes, it's my favorite PTZ camera. I like the Dahua PTZ camera too but it doesn't have IR LED's. The two Poker 10x PTZ cameras are the worst of the lot since the image quality suffers somewhat compared to the other PTZ cameras.
All three of the cameras I ordered were the PoE models. I didn't need the audio/alarm since I use audio from another camera to share with the Huisun in BI. I think you'll really like the camera.

Nah, don't need anymore speed domes. I have that re-branded 12x Dahua dome on my garage. One thing I like about the domes is the PTZ speed is much faster than the mini bullet. Another advantage of the dome is that nobody can see which direction the camera is pointed.

This car was parked on the corner for 10 minutes earlier this evening with it's lights turned off. From that spot in the street there is a nice view downtown. I'm guessing they were just looking at the view. Even at this angle the camera was able to read the license plate. All I had to change to view the plate was switching the camera from Auto Exposure to Manual and the plate number appeared. I didn't have to change the default Shutter speed either.
