I was directed here from another form.
Was told that I might be able to get some help here.

I need Advice on CCTV Security Surveillance DVR
I need some advice.
A friend of mine has a Surveillance system in his place of business.
It is a mechanical garage.
The DVR gave up and the people that installed it can not be reached.
It had 4 cameras connected (wired) to it and they seem to be working OK.
The DVR is connected to his router.
He asked me if I can replace it.
I would like to get one that is better quality than the ones they sell at Costco or similar places.
Would anybody know of a source to get this type of DVR or advice on a brand or a model number.
It has to have the capacity to be viewed remotely form another computer and an android device
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum..the costco units can be good quality if you buy the right ones...
First and most important question, what is your budget?
Second, are you prepared to run new ethernet cable?

The old DVR is located not to far from the router.
It is connected with a Ethernet cable.
It looks OK.
Do you think that I need a new one?
It can be done.
I have asked my friend and he is ready to spend about $300 on the DVR.

To clarify, I meant running ethernet from the current dvr localtion to the cameras...but at your budget, that is not likely...most likely the current DVR is analog and uses BNC (coax) cabling....correct me if im wrong....
If the above is correct, and he does not want to rerun cable, and stay at 300, then you should be looking at HD over coax..
What is the DVR model he currently has?
Here are some hd over coax units to consider
http://www.costco.com/Swann-8-Channel-HD-Analog-DVR-1TB-HDD,--4-720p-Cameras-with-82-ft.-Night-Vision.product.100239390.html
http://www.costco.com/Q-See-8-Channel-HD-Analog-DVR-with-1TB-HDD,-4-720p-Cameras-with-80-ft-Night-Vision.product.100229390.html
http://www.costco.com/Q-See-4-Channel-Analog-DVR-with-1TB-HDD,-4-1080p-Cameras-with-80'-Night-Vision.product.100236180.html
The last one being 1080p (vs 720p on the other two), but only 4 channels max (vs 8)...
Also note that the swann uses hikvision tvi technology which will most likely allow you to use your old cams as well...
The qsee, uses CVI (dahua) which may or may not support older analog depending on the dvr (you need to contact them to confirm.) I would replace all the old cameras if they are not HD.

You are correct. DVR uses BNC (coax) cabling
I do not want to change the cameras and they do not have Ethernet.
To change the cameras would be more expense and work that I will be doing.
We just want to change the DVR.
Quality was OK but now he has problems with the recording.
I am not sure what it is as I am not there.

Do you know the model of the DVR? just to make sure with respect to compatibility...
If all you want is to replace the DVR then look at this
http://www.nellyssecurity.com/recorders/tribrids/1080p/8-channel/eyesurv-esdv-omega-lite-8-8-channel-1080p-high-definition-hdcvi-tribrid-dvr.html
It can handle analog cameras + HD CVI cameras in the future and is priced cheap.
Add a WD purple drive for best performance.
Also, if he is experiencing recording problems it may just be a bad harddrive.

Thanks, Looks good.

WD Purple 2TB $82 @ newegg

WD Purple 4TB $157 @ Amazon

Do you know how to figure out time of recording per TB
I will check latter the capacity of the hard drive in the old DVR

Storage space is dependent on one thing only, the bitrate...the current DVR likely has a 500 or 1tb drive max...
