iOS Versus Android

For us old folks, I think it's what you learn first.
I have an Android OS at work that is also a card scanner. I only use a few features. Android is much better that they used to be, but I prefer IOS because it's what i started on.
other people ( like my 90 year old father, started on Android, and we have tried to get him to switch so we can fix FAFO clicks he does. when he fucks it..I no longer help....since he's stuck on Android and I can't fully support that phone because i don't know the OS.
In April 2008 I got the iPhone. and have continued with that. now it's baked into my brain.
I was Mr. Tech support for my buddies with new smart phones back in the day, and i hated the Droids because they had to be careful not to violate the patents of Apple. The way you surfed to mail, web and settings functions.
It felt as if everything had extra hassles or steps to access things that were " one touch" on IOS.
So it felt clunky and time consuming.

iPhone for my phone. I trust it a lot more and much better as far as privacy.
Multiple Android tablets/devices that I use for a variety of purposes. I don't trust it at all and assume zero privacy so I try to strip it down and block as much as I can. But devices are cheap and flexible and easy to hack and add/change most whatever you need to do so useful to have around.

you can install kiwi browser and use browser plugins like ublock origin
then you can install modified youtube app like revanced
the reason is clear and simple: block ads without any traffic tunneling. the mod youtube app has many other cool features, which make the experience alot better.
ads become the most annoying thing everywhere. on mobile devices its the worst experience because they implement video popups everywhere, sometimes with auto on sound.
life is so much easier without all this bullshit.
then you can easily sideload any app , old versions , stop updates etc
there are a few other annoying things with iOS.

My first iphone was from the early 2000's. I just got used to it, at one point I got a android phone. Tried it for a year, hated it. Nothing was smooth about it. Went back to the iphone.
About a year or two ago I picked up a Pixel and installed Graphene OS on it. This time I really tried to learn android. It was way way better than the android I had about 15 years earlier, but I still could not get used to it. So I switched back to IOS. I guess its like the above posters, it is what you are used to.
I do what I can to disable a lot of things on my iphone. I really only use it for the phone, texts, web browsing if I am not on my computer. Very few apps are installed.

Am I the only one that thinks iOS is more secure than Android? I always sense Android is suseptible to malware whereas iOS values user privacy and does a great job with setting management
Android. All day, every day. My wife uses iOS, mostly because that is what her girlfriends use. That's fine. Me and my girls, Android.

Android is a Google product. Android phone OEMs have no financial incentive to update their own version with apps/skins/etc for older devices after your initial purchase, so you may be stuck with an older OS with security vulnerabilities. The exception is Google branded phones.
Apple on the other hand continues to push out new OS versions and security updates even for older devices. Example, the iPhone XS was released in 2018 and is on the latest iOS 17. I also have an iPad 5th gen (2017), while not on the latest OS, is still receiving security updates. Consequently, the life cycle of my devices is 6+ years, which lowers my average annual cost of ownership.
Name any Android OEM that supports OS and security updates for a 6+ year old device.

Android O/S is on many. many devices. iOS is way to restricted and priority. Apple has always been that way. While in IT we had a Desktop Publishing dept. with their MACs, I remember they wanted to upgrade their HDs but Apple wanted a crazy high price and you had to have an authorized dealer do the work not to void their warranty. So I opened one up, sure enough a Seagate drive. We put a bigger one in, but No go, it would not recognize it. I ended up talking to a Tech at a Dealer and he told me that Apple removed a pin on the HD, sure enough the old drive had a missing pin. I removed the same pin on the new drive and we saved 4 times the cost to upgrade all the machines. That same department also had AppleTalk network, wow what a terrible Topology/Protocol. We finally had to give them their own server and tell them they had to hire their own IT person. Since the 90s, yes they have improved but being in IT most of my life, Apple has always been a pain to IT depts.

ZERO problems with Any Malware on any of my Samsung phones. Why that became a thing is how restrictive Apple is, yes Android needs more Apps to protect privacy more but we all seem to forget these phones are not phones, they are computers that allow us to use them as phones. If we treat them like a PC, add Antivirus software, use VPN, block Trackers, don't allow Anything to go to a cloud (Google or Samsung) or Apple), etc. we can limit the hacks. Truthfully, even with all that, we are all so gullible, these phones are tracking our every move. What is secure about that?
Those reports came out during a time when Samsung devices were catching on fire on airplanes and causing great bodily injury. So Apple likely performed a risk assessment on current products and elected to reduce the liability risk. As a shareholder, that was the correct move IMHO. If you believe it was some sort of corporate conspiracy to force consumers to upgrade, you are entitled to your opinion.

Did not know they labeled it Batterygate. If they did no wrong why pay $113 Million?
Samsung had a problem with a battery company they bought those batteries from that would overheat and they also found out it was a bad design in their Note phone too. Heat issues with Li-Pos are a very common problem, even to this day.
But I did not come here to bash Apple, they have a long history of problems as a company, from tax evasion, or tax avoidance as some call it, to patent fights, etc. All I can say is I know several Apple phone and Apple product users and when I show them things like 5G, which I had two years prior to Apple releasing a phone that supports it they always say the same thing, well Apple is waiting to perfect theirs. Maybe so but most of the Apple phone users I know now, are family members/a few friends where their company provides them with company phones so they stick with Apple for the ease of compatibility since Apple likes to be different. Most of our older family members use Apple phones for their ease of use, personally I think the operating of Android is easy too, but I think it is just what you get use to. Coming from IT, most everyone I know, which was many other IT depts. too in other companies, they all use Android, but this may have changed, but I doubt it.
This thread is an O/S thread and since I can't comment much on iOS I can only share dealing with devices from phones, media players, tablets. The main difference with iOS and Android is Apple controls their products and their iOS, where as Android O/S are on many other companies' devices. It is much easier for Apple to deal with software updates to their hardware. Android is like Windows O/S, dealing with multiple companies and their hardware. Sure I have had certain features not work properly after an update, but we quickly get a fixed update that solves the problem, been using Android for many years, all O/S updates can have issues, even Apple, maybe that is why they are always behind on new features. Apple finally went USB-C, after all these years of the users complaining, which helped us Android owners since we had to keep several Apple cables in our house over the years for our Fruithead family members, LOL
Wow, guess after the Apple suit against Samsung, Samsung got wise to patent hoarding, they now have the most patents in the Tech. world in 2023:

Yeah, we have only one family member that has bought into the Apple World, they have Apple everything, Watches (which are very good), Media players, iPads, etc. I think they have own every one of their products. They use to be first in line to get the latest iPhone but they seemed to of outgrown that. Our granddaughter, being on their phone plan, asked for an Android phone for graduation, her Mom refused and said you can only have an iPhone. LOL
One more story, I have many, I was in a car dealership, Buick, back when Infotainment systems were just coming out. I watched a Lady going nuts on a Manager, saying what do you mean the car does not support Apple, everyone has an Apple phone, when I looked around the lobby, she was the only one with one. LOL

Samsung is also very good at providing regular updates. For the s23 they are providing 5 years of updates however for the s24 and up it will be seven.

AnyDesk actually works pretty well for providing remote support to android users, but there are definite pros and cons to installing it and getting someone over 70 to use it.
