My brother just bought the above camera - fixed 2.8mm lens. Surprisingly bad picture once you get about 7-8m away. Good up close. Would have expected much better from 6MP. My 2MP cameras have better picture at distance. I thought that it could perhaps be improved by focusing but these seem to have a fixed focus - is this correct?

Wide angle FOV quickly dilutes the pixel density.

Below are the Dahua specs on this camera. Note their calculated Identify is 7m. Dahua is typically more generous than we are on this. ( we like to use 100 ppf - pixels per foot when calculating ID distance )

Just wait for the night image, then he will really experience poor picture.

Ha! He's pretty annoyed. I told him the 2MP would be better at night but he really wanted it mostly for day and went higher res thinking it would be better for distance with digital zoom.

There are cameras with higher resolution that would be much better at night, this is not one of them. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way.
