I own several IPC-HDW5831R-ZE (2018) cams and I've been looking for a more recent eyeball cam that equals in image quality (or better!) and I've yet to find one.

I recently found out about the DH-IPC-HDW5842T-ZE-S2 (2021) and I ordered two and set them up today. Really good cam, great features, but the side by side image quality is a lot better on the IPC-HDW5831R-ZE (2018) (both day and night), even though the DH-IPC-HDW5842T-ZE-S2 (2021) has a larger sensor and better specs. Oddly the 2021 cam has a bigger sensor but much worse image quality at night.

Am I missing something? Is there any eyeball camera with better image quality than the IPC-HDW5831R-ZE (2018)? I can't seem to find it.

Links:
  1. IPC-HDW5831R-ZE (2018) - 1/2.5” 8Megapixel progressive scan CMOS, 15 fps
  2. DH-IPC-HDW5842T-ZE-S2 (2021) 8MP 1/1.8" CMOS image sensor, 30 fps

I would say the 5842T-ZE will run circles around the 5831R-ZE just because the sensor is significantly larger. It's still not "up to spec" for a good 8K camera though. That takes a 1/1.2", or larger, sensor.

I'm mostly running default.

I'll need to wait until tomorrow to get daytime pics again.

Give the smart IR firmware to this camera and check again. The 2021 pics more vivid than the old ones.

Thanks for the shots. I think that the 2021 is better. Definitely has better color definition. You can see the expansion joints better in the 2021 shot giving better lower light contrast. But the real test is for a moving person. Still shots really do not yield a valid test.

Also it is important to dial in each cam to the best of its ability. Really what we are looking for is which cam does the best once it is dialed in as best as you can

Hmm, but with IR the 2021 is pretty bad...

The 2021 IR has bit part of on the wall and reflect back, this will decrease the IR will make the pic bit dark. Try to adjust the angle of the cam.

I can't get the 2021 to match the 2018. In the 2018 I can see more of the surrounding areas, even though it's grainy.

Cranking up the gamma made this cam look better than the 2018

Here's the 2021 with gamma at 100

@runraid I have a couple of 5831’s myself and also 2831’s (which I did a comparison to in my 5842 review). The 5842 is definitely better than the 5831s but looking at your pics above you would benefit from adjusting the installation and dialing in the image. I definitely would not advise pushing gamma to 100 as your artificially bumping light and adding noise when doing so. If anything I would generally advise dialing it down. Also don’t run Auto or Gain Priority, manual config is the best way to go.

If you would like, feel free to DM me and we can look to arrange some time where I can take a look at your system and assist in dialing in for your FOV specifically.

HTH and again feel free to reach out

The 2021 HDR looks too aggressive in your latest side by side. The contrast between dark and bright spots within the trees and dirt is too much.

So far all indications confirm I was right years ago when I posted this:

@adamg the HDR looks to aggressive in the 2018 or 2021? The 2018 looks better and it's just on default mode. If I tweaked the 2018 it would look a lot better than the 2021. The 2021 might have better specs but I'm not convinced it's a better camera.

Sorry, my bad. I fixed the above post. It's too aggressive on the 2021 camera. There shouldn't be those bright white spots within the tree at the top of the view.
