Hey, us turret freaks have been asking for a varifocal night color techonlogy turret for longer.. get in line! JK. Hopefully they’ll figure out a way to shrink it down for both style soon.

Which camera is better at night for security cam. The full color one bullet or dome. Or the 5231r-ze turret???
And what setting is better at night? 30fps or 50fps(max for the turret in pal). And what is the max fps for the full color one? Only 25/30fps?
Does the camera pickup more light with only 30fps? I think so....
I have to 5831r-ze turret, but want better night vieuw for moving people. Difficult that the full color is no turretstyle. The ultra bullet 8232 is the best I think...reviewed by nayr. That one has the bigger sensor 1/1.9inch. With the 4k one i only are ghosts... ;-).

Shutter speed can affect light. I don’t think FPS does. The slower the shutter speed, the more light collected. But the slower the shutter speed, the more blurred motion can be. If you’re looking to reduce blur, the general recommendation is to increase shutter speed, but that reduces light...
I have a 5631-ze turret which has similar low light ratings as the 5831. I can only use it at night in one area around my house, which has a street light right above it. My 2MP Starlight cameras do a lot better at night.

Yeah ok. Already played with the shutter speed on manual. Image can be super at night. But moving objects not gonna do it. I have some floodlights, but that's not enough.
The new 5mp starlight domes are also worse then the 2mp starlight at night.
The ultra expensive domes are also 2mp, so there is no better option I think.
Recently got another one of these set up in another place where there is also an Olympus camera, just like before.
First pic is from the Dahua at 1/3 second exposure, second pic from the old Olympus camera at 60 second exposure.
For comparison, here's a snapshot from a 2MP Dahua PTZ (pre-starlight) that is simply on auto exposure with IR enabled. This is full moon lighting.

Another set of pics from the evening of the night it was mounted.
Here is a comparison between an 8MP IPC-HFW1831E and the 2MP IPC-HFW4239T-ASE when both are configured for ideal night-time "weather-cam" performance.
The 8MP camera (darker two images) is on the back fence behind my house while the 2MP camera is mounted low on the front of my house. Otherwise they are both looking in roughly the same direction and have about the same lighting.
In the last image there is a vaguely purple area on the grass; this is actually IR light from the IR camera mounted a few feet higher. The camera is so sensitive that it sees this IR despite the IR filter being in place the whole time.
Here are some shared features between the frames to help compare:

No way that I see that would trigger a periodic still pic upload without using an additional program.

I was able to get my Dahua camera to FTP a snapshot image up every XX seconds (I had it set for 60 while testing, it was configurable between 1-50000 seconds). So while the camera did successfully send the images over via FTP on that interval, I didn't see any way of controlling what folder it puts them in on the FTP server, or the filename it uses.
This was my first time playing with that feature and I only spent a few minutes with it, so there may be a way around the path/filename issues, but I didn't see an obvious one.

Was it this camers (IPC-HFW4239T-ASE) that you were able to do the FTP?
The remote folder is not a requirement on WX Underground, so it need not be set.
Based on that, I will probably order this (if it is the one you used) camera and then pick your brain via PM for some more details.

I don’t have this 4239 model to test with. I used a 5231, but I’ve seen the FTP feature on my other Dahua models so I’d expect it to be on the 4239 as well.
The dealbreaker is that I don’t see a way to tell the camera not to use folders when it FTPs the image up. I also do not see a way to set the filename manually. So while the camera should be able to use FTP to upload images, the specific way that it works doesn’t seem like it will work for WeatherUnderground.
