In planning out my network rack, I was checking the size of the shelf I needed to buy... and now I'm confused as to the official specs. It's called a 1U NVR, but 1U is 1.75" high. The official specs say it's 2.2" high. So does it actually end up taking 2U of vertical space sitting on a shelf in a rack?
Is a Dahua NVR actually 1U or 2U in a rack?

The Dahua NVR box I have does not fit in a 1U slot .. expect to use a shelf and 2U space ..

Well, yeah. Which is why I’m finding it confusing that it’s referred to specifically as a 1U NVR, but then the specs for the model I have (still in box) says it’s 2.2” high. There is also an official rackmount adapter sold for it (but expensive), so it’s not like “1U” could be assumed to refer to some other measurement system.
I have the rack space so it’s not an issue, but I need accuracy when planning where shelves go.

Will do! Moved to a new place and it’s my first time doing a proper organized rack. For the last umpteen years I’ve just had various piles of switches and servers, lol.

Definitely looks like it’s 2”. A 1U device can be only 1.75” absolute max, assuming it had ears that could be mounted directly on the sides. (See Unifi switches that are 1.7”).
With a shelf requirement, it would have to be thinner, like maybe 1.60”.
Dahua should really look at engineering their 1U NVRs at an industry standard 1.7” and supplying rackmount ears… or giving themselves some breathing space and just bumping them up to 1.5 or 1.75U.

Looks like 1.75 to me which is 1U. I compared with my unifi 1U devices and they are the same height. I don’t think the version I have is even rackable if I recall.
Well, they should at least stop using industry standard terms inappropriately!
But Ethernet, POE, HDMI, USB, RTSP, ONVIF, h265, ftp, https, the list goes on… there’s a lot of standards-based stuff being used in these NVRs. And the PFH101 shows they are at least passively aware of racking standards.
None of those things are their standards.

Eg mounting holes on every ATX motherboard are in the same position regardless of manufacturer and model.
You can't even get the same mounting holes on a security camera from the same manufacturer.

I just unboxed mine to measure. Without the feet - so only the housing - it’s 1.85” thick. I mean… how CLOSE to being able to stick ears on this thing are they? Just shave off 0.15” and we’re good!
With feet, it measures 2.06”, which is less than the 2.2” spec, but still more than 1U.

The reason the shelf doesn’t line up is because if I placed it higher up, the NVR wouldn’t have fit due to the thickness of the shelf. Remember, it’s on a shelf, it’s not mounted. Oh and yes it does have rubber feet I believe which also adds to the height. Good point.Has it got feet on it?
Did you include those in the measurement?
Why does the shelf it sits on not be aligned to an RU?
The entire setup is now ruined and must be destroyed.
Heh, that caught my eye too, but you have a VERY neat and tidy setup there. And Unifi FTW! At least, for everything but cameras.
I got my rack last week decommissioned from a business, and it came with a bunch of shelves and PDUs installed… and apparently some genius years ago installed a 1U full-depth shelf BETWEEN two Us… which made the top and bottom screw holes closer together than spec, but they decided to force them in anyways. Totally chewed up the screw heads putting them in, and made it a bear to disassemble today.
where did you get that mount? I am wanting to do the same in my closet. Also, are you mounted in a stud or just using wall anchors?

Don't use wall anchors for something like this.
Mount into the studs, or Mount a thicker piece of plywood driving screws / bolts the studs and then mount your rack on that ..
I don’t have studs on the piece I’m screwing into though. The span is too short and the only studs are in the corners. Weight of the NVR is close to 10 pounds
