I've been taking a look at the camera firmware and have some ideas to try out around tweaking the 'backdoor fixed' firmware for CN 'hacked to English' cameras.

Apart from the learning and satisfaction aspects of this - with the 'Hikvision backdoor' stories, and the updated firmware they've published to remediate the problem, we're probably going to see quite a few people caught out by applying this updated firmware, that's why I'm interested in exploring this topic.

I'd be happy to send it you, alastair, but it may take a while if you're in Scotland.

Interestingly enough - I'm just in the process of exploring this same topic on a "bricked_when_I updated_to_5.4.5" camera that a helpful EU person sent me.
Progress is looking good so far!
The CN region camera has progressed through 5.3.0 to 5.4.0 and tomorrow will go to 5.4.5, without bricking, or becoming Chinese, without the 'mtd hack'.
Before resorting to the postal service, it would be easy enough to try other firmware via the tftp updater.
Check your conversations.
But I think you may need 5 posts or more before you can do that.
