Hey guys. We’re just past the 6 month mark with my BI system after I got tons of good advice from my first thread here.

I only have two cameras so far and went with Dahua IPC-HDW5231R-ZE’s from Andy. I find them to be fantastic cameras and I’m very happy with their performance and look. I opted for the wall mount brackets as well.

My NVR is an HP ProLiant DL360E G8 running ESXI 6.5 running on Windows Server 2019. I originally had Blue Iris installed natively on the machine, but opted for virtualization after a lot of testing and found the results to be excellent, especially since its allowed me to virtualizate 4 other devices (Cisco WLC, a network file server, Cisco Unity Call Manager and Unity Connections). Power is via PoE through a Cisco 3750G switch. Firewall and IPSec is accomplished with a Cisco ASA5520.

When I converted to ESXi, I upgraded the storage array from 2x1TB in RAID 1 to 5x1TB in RAID 5. This allows me more storage for Blue Iris while also giving me plenty of space for the NFS.

I have the Dahua cameras (2MP) set natively to 20FPS and mirror that setting in Blue Iris. I am currently recording constantly, and sending push alerts to the mobile app when triggered using motion sense. BI overlays are disabled, and the cameras are Direct to Disk encoded.

I have the BI server and cameras on a separate subnet for the IPC systemZ My BI remote access IP is set to the internal network IP. Once connected to the VPN, the Blue Iris app acts as if locally connected, as does the remote web browser UI, and all traffic is encrypted.

Here’s the view from my two cameras:

Driveway:

Facial recognition is lacking a bit at the front due to the height of camera mounting. I would like to investigate a camera at about doorbell height to better capture faces at the correct height.

The driveway camera has been good. I am surprised at the wide angle of these cameras, they’ve worked out well for me in my tough setup (Long, narrow lot; house close to the street).

I am investigating locations for two more cameras. I would like to get coversge of the other side of the house, opposite the driveway, and of the backyard itself.

Any advice on the camera settings I’ve got comfigured?

This has really been an adventure and I’m always finding new features and capabilities in BI. So much to learn!

Thanks,
Nick

I would unceck all instances of limit decoding.

Bump make time up to .5 or so.

Bump Pretrigger video buffer to 1.0 at the least.

Done!

The pretrigger buffer will include a little more video to see what happened immediately before the trigger, right?

I have turned make time up to .5. This is to prevent nuisance trips?

I figured limit decoding would be similar to direct to disk encoding. What does limit decoding change?

Thanks,
Nick

see wiki, optimizing blue iris...it will screw up your motion detection.
also the use of a hotspot renders motion detection useless at it will trigger for almost anything generating tons of false alerts.
