Curious, was not aware that grey market cameras should perform any differently than 'full retail.' I thought the differences would be related to warranty, firmware upgrades etc.

That would be correct; functionally they should perform no differently than like "western region" models, with the exception that they'll probably be PAL hard-wired along with the firmware and warranty issues you previously mentioned.
