Let's see what today holds

Yours will be interesting. You have lots of light, but it is the direction it comes from. I have 33,000 lumens on the front of my house and zero chance for LPR in color.

I think similar to mine, yours will be hitting more the side of the car than the back.

It will hit the back of the car as it proceeds to the right side of the image (one-way street). The one panel of the lamp will be tilted towards the right.

Only time will tell!

Yeah you gotta be lucky, have enough light, a good angle, and get them to slow or stop...

In the direction of travel (one-way street), there's a stop sign at the intersection to the left and another one at the end of the block to the right. Cars don't tend to speed up nor do people drive very quickly here. The period in the '90s after the Soviet collapse, there were massive shortages of everything including fuel so it's not uncommon to see people put a car in neutral when travelling downhill.

I should have at least the same amount of light as in this post.

May be able to get a plate or two with the SD1A404XB pointed and zoomed in a bit.

Do what I do and have the ptz watch your primary area, then have a spotter cam tell it to zoom into the LPR capture zone when it sees a car heading the right direction

The primary area for the PTZ is also very close to the LPR capture zone. Since the SD1A404 isn't a fast PTZ, I'll adjust the home position a bit so it only has to zoom in to get the LPR position. No panning or tilting. I'm curious to see how this pans out.

Okay, quite a day today.

The cop, regular not the investigators, contacted me today regarding a theft from a public health facility at the other end of my block. He told me "sometime between Friday night and Monday early AM, probably at night but not 100% sure, two individuals, one tall and the other shorter". They stole a computer, wired phone, toolbox and a bunch of random stuff (light bulbs, etc).

Jesus. Not too much to go on but I logged into the NVR and off I went.

Started reviewing the days between 10pm and 6am which is when my tripwires activate and I can easily (relatively speaking since I'm using a Dahua NVR) find activity. Most of my cameras don't distinguish between people, vehicles, animals and blowing trash so this took a bit of work.

Finally got a hit at 1:30am Monday, the last few hours I had to review. An individual walked by carrying a sack of something over his shoulder. Then at 3:07am, THE SAME GUY WALKS BY! This time, he's stuffing a cardboard box into a backpack. He's dressed exactly the same. Both times he walks from the direction of the robbery.

I notify the cop and he comes by. I copy the videos to his phone and he's happier than a pig in shit. They had almost nothing to go on before the videos.

There's also possibly a woman involved. She paces nervously back and forth and goes in and out of the "problem house" on the block. At 1:28am, she walks to the intersection where the suspect would appear and then back to in front of the problem house. She waits on the opposite side of the street from my place where the guy walks. When he does appear, she crosses the road and starts to walk with him.

Bingo.

Oh, and the investigators that came by, the ones that started this thread, to size up the cameras as they busted a chop shop where a bunch of stolen electric scooters were found. And two of them found were ones that were stolen from close to my place. One was a daylight assault and robbery of the scooter and we caught the suspects on camera as they drove by my place. The other was stolen at night and we're sure it was in the back of a truck that went by my place at 2:30am the next day.

So it does pay to be vigilant and build a decent system. Wife is 200% sold now (she was only 150% sold before this) and the cops should be able to find the suspect from the public health robbery based on the footage we were able to supply.

Looking forward to the next adventure!

That is so great! I love stories like this. Yes, this hobby/obsession can be productive!

For sure. It's satisfying to know that things are being done and we're able to help. Cop said they returned a bunch of electric scooters and electric bikes to their owners who thought they'd never see them again. That must be a great feeling.

My P
As the wife and I were turning in for bed last night, there were two uniformed and one plainclothes investigators in front of the house pointing out the cameras.

They said between themselves that it was too late to knock but they'll be by today.

I wonder what went down last night? Guess I'll find out soon!
My PD didn't care what time it was. They woke me up at 2:30 in the morning looking to get my footage.

Cop was back today with a specialist. He wanted his own copy of the videos from the public health facility (it's a repair shop for EKG machines, etc) and to get all the model numbers and serial numbers of the equipment. The videos are headed for their "laboratory" to see what else they can get from the videos.

Oh, and they said it looks like the guy is eating a mango from a tree at the scene of the crime! What a set of cajones.

Why would they want the model numbers and serial numbers of @CanCuba cameras and why would he provide that unless under warrant?

WTF reason would that be?

I can see model numbers because they are interested in why it is better than Ring lol, but I don't see the reason for the serial numbers. Maybe someone like @JNDATHP would know?

I studied law a few years ago. Disclosure of evidence can include the most banal (to laymen) things. When people fight drunk driving charges or speeding tickets, the history of the measurement devices, be it radar/laser gun or breathalyzer, and all pertinent information must be disclosed to the defendant.

A lot of people get off on things like radar guns not being calibrated before a shift, a breathalyzer not undergoing the proper routine maintenance, etc.

It's reasonable to suspect that this is the case here. Just information regarding the devices used to generate evidence against a suspect.

But they never asked to take my NVR and/or hard drives. I forget if it's this forum or Reddit where I've read of several cases where the cops take the equipment that has the original recordings on it until the trial is over.

Because that ain't happening.

Ok, update to the original reason for the post.

Last August, a neighbour stole 3 wooden patio chairs from my downstairs neighbours front patio at 10:30pm. Not the crime of the century as we caught the whole thing on 8 cameras. From his tag-along buddy hopping the fence, to them passing the chairs over the fence, to them carrying the chairs into his house just across the street from mine. When the cops went to arrest him at 6pm the next day, and entered the house to find him hiding under the bed, the chairs were still there. Not the criminal genius he thought he was.

Since my neighbour lives outside the country, my wife was the one who filed the complaint. The chairs were recovered and he was sentenced to house arrest after spending a couple days in the clink. He has since left the country but his girlfriend and cousin still live in the house.

Last week, my wife got a call from the investigators which surprised us as we thought the case was closed and was, essentially, a minor crime. She was asked to bring in the videos (again) and has the interview as I write this.

But the cop I deal with has shown interest in what's going on with the house, who enters/etc, and the local gossip told me this morning that it's suspected that the girlfriend is involved in small-time drug trafficking which connects a lot of dots re: continued interest in the chair theft, foot traffic, etc.

So we now believe that the authorities have a definite interest in bringing the hammer down on these folks. The law here is much more liberal when it comes to the authorities being able to effect a civil forfeiture if property is used for crime. In short, we think that they interested in seizing the property.

The chair thief will be arrested if he tries to re-enter the country as he was under house arrest when he left (don't ask me how he was able to get a passport and leave the country). A cousin of his is a lawyer and has been trying to warn the girlfriend to get out of whatever nonsense she's involved in so the heat is on.

We, the normal, law-abiding citizens of the neighbourhood, are very excited at the possibility of the seizure happening. These folks are really nothing but problems and have been for years.

Will definitely be proving more updates.
