How does the Dahua H.265 series fit in the mix of ecosavy 3.0 and lite series? They all support H.265?

So far I'm very impressed w/ the "New" 5MP H.265 Lite series.

However, it does have a narrower field of view as the sensor is 4:3 and not 16:9 or 3:2 like the others.

Also, It doesn't have any of the advance video detection features of the more expensive "Pro" or Eco-Savvy models.

It doesn't record audio. And has only one Sub-stream.

For some of you, that may be a deal breaker, but for me, I just need regular Motion Detection so I'm fine with it. At the same price as the Fixed-lens 6MP...I'll take it! :)

Here are night shots comparing a few of the higher megapixel cameras (including the "new" H.265 Lite 5MP IPC-HDW2531R-ZS).

You can download the attached ZIP file for all the images, plus a few extra @ higher shutter speeds (1/60,1/120).

All pictures were taken w/ the Cameras at Default settings (Gain, 3D-NR, etc. @ default 50) other than:

Bitrate @10240kb/s
15fps
1/30 Shutter

All with the cameras own IR light (all others turned off).

For Reference, this is the Swann NHD-818 4MP @ ~1/3 Shutter (test setup is in 2nd story window in the upper left corner of the image):

NVR_CH02_playback_1526660890446.jpg
You'll notice that you can't even hardly see the warehouse across the street and can barely see the shrubs across the parking lot.

Next up is the 2531R-ZS w/ IR:

5mp with IR at 1-30th.jpg

Here's a shot compared to the 6mp 4631EM-ASE:

6mp with IR at 1-30th.jpg

8mp 4830EM-AS @ 5mp resolution (to give it the highest bitrate/pixel ratio):

8mp with IR at 1-30th.jpg

Finally, here's the 2mp Starlight 5231R-ZE (which just blows them all out of the water):

2mp Starlight with IR at 1-30th.jpg

Before anyone gets excited that the bush, in the center of the image, is blowing out the picture; here's the same shots without IR:

Thanks for the sharing. The 2 MP still the best one in the night . Please post some daytime pics too. The 2xxx lite H.265, I will get some hdw2231r-zs for checking soon. This is starlight one

It seems like there should be more of a difference in detail between the 2mp and 5mp. This could be due to less sophisticated DSP?

Also, I'm surprised there isn't much of a difference between the 6mp and 8mp (albeit slightly different focal length as you can see).

I see a fairly significant difference between the 6mp and the 8mp. did you digitally zoom to a fixed object like the jeep or the stack of 2x4s?

Well, I would agree with you, however, it isn't consistent across all of the frame. To me, the 6mp does a better job on the pallets, while the 8mp does better with the logo on the red trailer. I'd say I 85% agree :)

My point is that it's not a big enough difference that I'd go out and buy all 8mp cams versus 6mp when setting up a new system. I just don't see enough improvement to warrant the one over the other.

See here what happens @ night:
Capture2.PNG

Shutter speed is 1/100th w/ No IR (it wouldn't reach anyways) and Gain 50, all other settings default.

Here's another comparison of the 5mp Lite vs. the 6mp in the dark (1/100, Gain 50, IR off)

5mp Lite vs. 6mp.PNG

Granted, that's a pretty much useless image from both of them, but illustrates how much more light the 5mp is letting in w/ it's 1/2.7" Sensor vs. the 6mp 1/2.9" sensor

Seems the HDW2531R-ZS has better nightvision than the HDW4631EM-ASE

Agreed, there's still no contest for the night-image-per-dollar to the 2mp 5231R-Z(E) series.

If someone's looking to go just one step down though, the 5mp H.265 Lite Series is not that bad.

I'm going to be using the 5mp for license plate capture (long distance w/ wide area to cover) roughly 60-70 feet out

Still haven't got it mounted where it goes, but after installing SD card and cleaning lenses on both, the 5mp isn't looking too shabby against the 6mp.

For ~$140 you get a 5mp w/ Zoom and better optics.
For ~$145 you get a 6mp w/ No zoom that doesn't perform as well in the dark.

Just upgraded the firmware for the IPC-HDW2531R-ZS...Oddly, I could not find this on the Dahua International website. I found it on the DahuaWiki for new 5MP "Starlight" Cameras: https://dahuawiki.com/USA/IPCamera/Pro/N52BF3Z

Camera is working fine and displays the correct model number. Can now officially change the Sub-stream to "D1" 704x480 now that it's NTSC firmware.

Capture2.PNG

BIG PLUS! IVS IS NOW ENABLED!! Now I can use Trip-wire to trigger Event recording. (This was previously one of the few "cons" to this camera).

Capture.PNG

So, judging from the file name, this one SHOULD cover all of the 5MP "Starlight" a.k.a H.265 Lite Series (I'm 99.99999999% sure now that they're the same camera because the firmware for the N52BF3Z (5MP "Starlight") is: DH_IPC-HX2X3X-Rhea_EngSpnFrn_N_V2.622.0000000.18.R.20171110)

It doesn't say it's specifically intended for the 2531R-ZS, but it seems they usually only have one firmware per series so I tried it and it worked!

So there ya go, if you want the Official Dahua NTSC firmware this should work.

@EMPIRETECANDY do you see any issues with using this firmware?

Thanks for this review and pics. I need more than 2 mp because my house is 80’ from the street and I want better detail. To me, it seems worth sacrificing some nighttime capability to gain 5 or 6 MP during the day.

No it would not be worth it. See the many threads with crap nightime footage.
That said, there are new 1831 and 2831 4k bullets that are good at night...see threads.

Unfortunately, I can’t put a bullet on the front of the house. It’s gotta be a dome or turret to appease the wife.

Then stick with the 2mp varifocal starlight.
If I do that I’m left with relatively poor DORI numbers. Who would have thought choosing cameras would be so difficult. I’m trying to upgrade from an Axis M3026 that’s currently in place and I was hoping to replace it with 2 cameras splitting the field of view.

You will be left with worse if you cant see anything at night. with varifocal you can zoom in to just the right fov and maximize pixel count. 8mp is not 4x better than 2mp.
But you seem to know better.

Yes, I’m sure I know better about some things, but this subject definitely is NOT one of them.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading, and trying to ask what I think are reasonable questions that I didn’t see answered in the wiki or other posts.

I must still be missing something because while I accept that the 2 MP starlight’s will give me the best night time picture, I have to think that there must be a turret Camera available that will give me a much better daytime picture. I would think there are a few, so maybe one of them would be acceptable at night too.

Is it possible that the 2 MP starlight zoomed out to provide about an 85-90 degree horizontal FOV will give me a high quality daytime picture of cars and people 125-150 ft away?
