LPR setup help

Very informative, thank you for that both of you. I have all 4 of those shown above on various cameras.

As for the 431, for some reason if gain isn't set to 0-?? whatever range I want, it screws the colors up. Put the gain back to 0, and everything is fine. Weird.
But now that I have the picture reporting colors accurately, I can get dialing things back in.

I'll attach a few pictures in a bit to show what I mean.

FIrst picture is shown with gain at 20, notice the grass and fire hydrant.
Second picture put back to 0 gain.... huge difference which doesn't make a lot of sense to me, unless it's just a coincidence.

Weird how it messes with the color.

Try range 0-50 vs fixed 20-20
 
As I recall, I've tinkered with almost all the settings .....I think as the Seasons change with the Sun Angle and the Sunrise/Sunset and Snow cover etc. I tweak things from time to time.

Haven't tried the range yet, lots going on around here. heh..

However, brain powers that be, running color tonight. White/light rear plates are overexposed, harder to read. Black/darker plates easier to read.
I know it's from the street lamp right in the capture plate area, but anything to attempt helping the overexposure?
 
Maybe cut back on IR or play with iris and/or gain

LOL no good way to know without playing with it. Pics help

The info in this thread is all well and good, but what we all really want to know is what kind of pizza was it?

The 431 doesn't have iris control, but I adjusted gain and exposure settings. I'm getting close, I think?

Picture 1 and 2 are the lighter plates, pic 3 a dark plate.
Now to see how things go with the new plates.

What is the affective FOV (lens in MM)? How far away is the plate in those shots?

Running 1/2,000. But my capture area is right under a street lamp.

Oh, it's a great camera, but $800+ it's expensive. One of the cool things about this camera is it has GPS installed, can run LED or IR lights, can hook up an external light with the cam controlling it, and can also hook up an external radar for vehicle speed. lol...

10-50mm lens. Where the 413 cam has a 10-32mm lens.

As great as it is, the price is probably a sticking point for a lot of people. Including myself, but I really wanted it. lol

If you don't mind the price, and need the 10-50mm lens, yep... it's great.
If not, the 413 would be great, or if you wanted a more versatile camera, the 7x series cam grabbing face, plates, etc...

It's a 10-50mm lens. 431 cam link The street lamp is about 65 feet. The other side of the street curb is about 125 feet. The capture area is about 75-115 foot.
If the weather cooperates, I'll take my measuring wheel and see what I come up with.

EDIT: OOOHHH hes not using a Z-12....he went whole hog on a 431....Never mind my post is not relevant to exactly.

manual focus and zoom.

It’s fun to tinker around though. The street lighting around here screws with night plate capture as well. :) maybe you could stick a Z-4 underneath the z12 and get everything all the time in any situation… best of both worlds.

I tried hard to use the Z-12 for color day /IR night, but as many discovered the focus shift from color to B&W made you miss plates.
The Condos best success rate with the Z-12 after much tinkering was to use IR manually ON, B&W manually ON, Focus manually Set,
No more DST worry, no more focus hunting.
Straight plates 24/7. 99% success rate unless no plates installed. I had 2 overview cams that captured additional vehicle data about the traffic coming thru.

Having the IR on auto in my situation caused missed plates at Civil Twilight,Sunrise,&Sunset.

Yes, went the big boy route with the 431. lol..

I'm staying color 24/7, for now, since I'm REALLY close to great captures 24/7. Plus the fact, hopefully soon, the city is replacing the street lamp with a much brighter one. I know a alderman here and I ask him about it every couple weeks. He's a good guy, and is mad that it has taken this long to replace the light.

Perhaps this weekend I'll post pictures of my current setup for plate/face captures.

Yep, it really is big. I'm not sure if the grey makes it look bigger or not? It kind of blends in with the house and shadows. Of course that doesn't stop the handful of neighbors who shake their head in disgust when ANYBODY does something they don't like.

If the radar wasn't so expensive I would purchase one. It would be really cool to see how fast vehicles are going past in a supposed 25mph zone.

When I get my other 7442-x camera up, it will be interesting to see how well I capture face/plates looking towards the east.

Been there, done that, and still doing it LOL.

Will be real interested in the difference in light pickup running color at night between those two cameras...
