LPR with DS-2CD2032-I 12mm from 100 ft?

I have a DS-2CD2032-I 12mm and was wondering if it could be used for LPR from 90-100 ft. Camera would be located under a 2nd story eve and camera angle is less than15°. What do you think?

Hi CRC,

From what I have been reading you should be mounting the camera lower to get a better angle on the car.

Though at 11 degrees that looks fairly good imho.. hopefully we'll see some experts chime in so as I also would like to learn more on this.

Is the street sloping upwards to your house? If so the angle maybe different....

It's pretty much level.

Angle looks pretty good, my experience is that I need a lot more zoom than 12mm to get reliable captures at that distance.

95ft - 50mm lens - 1MP camera


120ft - 60mm lens - 1MP camera

I plan to double check my distance measurements this evening. My laser measure showed a distance of 95ft and google earth was 110-130 ft. Should I also measure the width of the street? Once I get the final measurements I'll be looking for a recommend camera for this situation that can cover both lanes of the street. I'm guessing there is an LPR camera guide here somewhere, I just haven't found it yet.

To @mat200 's point, yes. Mounting to the corner of the house at that first level roofline would be better.

For reference that first video the camera is mounted at 10' and the second one at almost 15' above the capture point.

Roofline, first floor eves? Thanks for pointing that out. I'm a little concerned with trees and parked cars getting in the way. I took some photos with my iphone from 3 locations to see how it looks. Location #2 looks pretty good but that tree to the left might be a problem.

That's my neighbor's palms, they hang over the property line and block a couple of my sprinklers too. You're welcome to pull them out....just let know when so I can turn my cameras off for scheduled maintenance.

I'm not sure but many of my neighbors have built brick "structures" as can be seen in a couple photos above..As I was responding I just realized why you asked; hide a camera in the mailbox stand? I'll have to think about that a little.

If getting it from Andy, remember to ask for the ipcamtalk member price - he'll try to save you a little from his Aliexpress store prices.

Also recommend getting a junction box to put the cable connection in - PFA121 iirc should work nicely.

30m (100ft) with that camera and lens combo gives to 168 pixels per metre. in my experience 200ppm isa bout the lower limit of what you should have for human readability. I always aim for North of 420ppm.

Now you are talking. I'd mount it on one of the lower levels of the house, rather than up on the second story, just to give you better angles to the plate. if you have the option and can get it down to about 900mm (3ft) then you will be able to look under the trays of utilities/trucks as well.
