I think I'd use weatherproof PIRs though, but that's just me.

I heard numbers like $2000-$3000 thrown around by the local TV news outlets over the Summer.

Why would it cost $10,000 to repair! o_O

The part for my Honda is $110.00

Perhaps the thieves end up cutting something else near the cat which cost a fortune to replace?

A piece of pipe to replace the cat would be a lot cheaper
Back 30 years most people bypassed them because they would clog up for one reason or another.

Knock on wood, We put 200k miles on our Hondas, and have not had to replace a cat yet.
My old Tundra made 180k with no problems. I would hate to price a cat for my Acura or new F150.
The cat protector or cat covers are cheap enough they are probably worth it. Just wash the mud out from on top of them.
The newer cats have even more precious metals in them, and get a little more money from the junk dealer.

It is common to cut the transmission cooler line along with other stuff, they are only interested in speed.
