Which country will be the first to drop their tarrifs on the USA to receive 0% tarrif reciprocity? Or does such an animal not exist because dropping tarrifs on USA imports would crush them?

'DOGE Impact': Federal Govt Layoffs Dominate Biggest March Job Losses In 36 Years

March’s total is the third-highest monthly total ever recorded.

The highest monthly total occurred in April 2020 when 671,129 cuts were recorded, followed by May 2020 with 397,016. It is the highest total for the month of March on record, since Challenger began reporting on job cut plans in 1989.

The Stock Market Sucks...those who live in Fear assume the worse, way before anything happens. It is all Assumptions/Gambling, assuming the worse so Sell, Sell, Sell...the smart and fearless capitalizes on their fear, buying at a low price and only get richer, while the little man watches their money rollercoaster with avg. 5-7% gain. Too much drama for me...

Yep, as you know i have 0 exposure to the market. I like my boring steady guaranteed 5%

Trump noted 10% is the base tariff

It get's very complex and nuanced once you dig into the details

USA gives US farmers a LOT of Government support ..

Recently USA gave a lot of support for EVs, Green Energy, Bio-Fuels, Semi-conductors ..

USA diary farmers get a lot of support .. recall Government Cheese

So, Canada for example has significant "tariffs" on US diary to allow Canadian Farmers not to have to deal with "diary dumping" into Canada

Thus, how does one fairly balance this all out ??

Seems like an attempt to find the "Theory of everything"

That noted, also a big challenge for business as it takes many years to get ROI on a factory / new building .. and if the next President changes things, well so much for that Investment

I am already seeing ripple / knock-on effects of cancelling contracts for goods and services ..

definitely getting a recession with this and the tariffs ..

Asking US guys here

Is it true that there is no VAT on imported goods only duties ?

Import duties/tax on german cars is only 3.5% ?

Import cars from US to EU means 19% vat (around +16%) and custom duties are around +10%

Hi @duplo

in the USA there is a "De minimis" rule for import, that means "too trivial for the court" to deal with.

The amount is $800 currently. So anything under $800 has no duty to it.

combined with the Universal Postal Union (UPU) treaty that allows "developing nations" to get subsidized mailing allows China ( somehow defined as a developing nation even tho it is spending money building nuclear weapons and flying to the moon ) - and you get super cheap shipping from China via the "slow boat"

So, Alibaba, Shein, and Temu items are super super cheap to the USA.

Beyond $800 I do not know much

oh, and I forgot to mention ..

Each US State / County / City can levy sales taxes ..

Here's a map that should give you an idea of they complexity of this

also, taxes can vary based on products ( food, junk food, prepared food, drinks, .. it does get super complex once you have to make an e-commerce platform )

But those dont effect the import.
I guess? they could be considered similar to VAT?

In the bigger Blue States ( NY, CA ) they have blown out the "nexus" rule and claim they have the rights to a "use tax" for all purchases to residents
( imho I believe this to be abusive, but they are getting away with it .. )

example :

New York Sales Tax
New York State imposes both sales tax and use tax on transactions. Sales tax is typically charged at the point of sale on goods and services, while use tax is usually charged on items that were purchased outside of the state but are used within the state.

That would be a VAT

Fortunately those only apply to our communist states

I'm thinking that sales and use taxes are a non-issue when discussing tariffs because they apply to both USA and imported items.
