MTD Hack upgrade?

Hey everyone, I hate to beat a dead horse here, but I just wanted to clarify:

Unless I'm misunderstanding what I read, it seems that if I have a Chinese 2xx2 camera that came with 5.1.6, updated to 5.2.5 with the MTD hack, I can upgrade to the latest firmware (5.4.5) without issue in English now?

If I am able to update, does it need to be a specific international firmware? Or can I use the English/US one?

Do I need to redo the MTD hack on any further upgrades? Or will the 5.2.5 MTD hack "stick" with the upgrades so that English is the main language?

Thanks guys!

Hi muctur,
My camera is still on 5.1.6 I want to upgrade same as yours. The MTD hack to upgrade the 5.1.6 to 5.2.5 that you mentioned is the one on the thread "Hikvision 5.2.5 & 5.2.8 Full English (INC DAYS OF WEEK) mtd Hack"?
I'm confused cuz these thread seems to be a downgrade not upgrade.

Well, I wanted the newer features that are offered on 5.4.5.

But as for what I did:

First I upgraded to 5.2.5 from 5.1.6. When I installed the update, some cameras bricked, some didn't. So I had TFTP ready just in case. The ones that upgraded without issue started up in Chinese, so I did the MTD hack and it worked without issue.
The other cameras that bricked, I upgraded through TFTP. They started up in Chinese, just like the other cameras which worked normally. MTD hacked them and it worked without issue.

I'm going to attempt to upgrade them to 5.3.0, then 5.4.0, then 5.4.5 soon. From what I've read, you must do the "step" upgrades and not just jump to 5.4.5, as it will brick.
If @copex is right, it shouldn't be an issue.

I will let you know how it goes!

Ok, thanks muctur. I will be waiting also for the results.
To go from 5.1.6 to 5.2.5, did u use the firmware from http://www.hikvisioneurope.com/portal/?dir=portal?

I also was also considering upgrading from the chinese firmware and use the google translator on browser, dont know if it would be too hassle. Anyways the last firmware on chinese hikvision website is 5.3.0.

I used the non-4 Lines firmware from here: Custom Firmware Downgrader 5.3.0 Chinese to 5.2.5 English
I followed the steps/video on here to do the upgrade and MTD hack: Hikvision 5.2.5 & 5.2.8 Full English (INC DAYS OF WEEK) mtd Hack

I only followed these steps for getting from 5.1.6 to 5.2.5, not for any higher firmware or different version. So if your firmware is different than 5.1.6, I wouldn't be able to help :(

So good news. I upgraded the firmware from the cameras web portal using the international firmware upgrades and it upgraded without issue.

I've only done two so far, but it seems to be working all the way to 5.4.5! No TFTP use so far.

I have done the step upgrades, upgrading in this order 5.1.6 > 5.2.5 with MTD hack > 5.3.0 > 5.4.0 > 5.4.5.

Again, this is with the international firmware, NOT from the US Hikvision site.

Some bad news. I may have bricked one. But after doing some research, it may have been a camera I replaced at a later point that came with 5.2.0 or newer (up to 5.2.5) preinstalled.

If this is true, it was my mistake as it is known that Chinese cameras with newer than 5.1.6 preinstalled cannot upgrade past 5.2.5/5.2.8.

I'll keep you updated.

Update #1: I checked the camera and it came with 5.3.0. Good news, I can unbrick it with TFTP. Bad news is it will only take 5.2.5 now :( Better news: I have a 2CD2T42WDI replacing it tomorrow. Haha

Hey, well done, and thanks for sharing!

What does SADP show for this camera? Firmware 4.0.8 by any chance?
And if it's just a 'language mismatch' causing no web GUI, check it out with ONVIF Device Manager.

Apparently, I had already done an MTD hack on it (or maybe the firmware they loaded on it came with a hack?) at some point because when I uploaded the 5.2.5 on there, it showed up in English.

It did not show up in SADP after I attempted the 5.3.0 update. I just jumped straight to TFTP'ing it with 5.2.5 again and it worked.

I tried to TFTP 5.3.0 international version on it after that, that did not work either. Did not show up in SADP either. So back to 5.2.5 with TFTP.
