I'm new to surveillance. Please help.

I had a cisco Poe. So I purchased a Swann 1080p 3mp cameras to get my feet wet. The Swann software is super buggy. The live view was clear but choppy for some reason and the night view was terrible. I was using a quad cpu Mac Pro--->cisco--->Swann ip camera setup for kick and grinds.

1. What is the ideal camera brand to buy with a good day and a good night view? Playback should be good too.
2. Should I just get the standalone system? No surveillance software seems to support the Mac computer anyways.

Where should I start? If it's expensive, I can add-on over time.

@BigAl Welcome to the forum..if the swann was an 820/825 camera then its a rebranded hikvision...you need to properly set the camera to get decent night vision - one of the downsides of 3mp cameras in general is that their night vision is worse than 2mp or 1.3mp cameras...you need to lower the wdr to under 10 and turn noise reduction to 100...post an image of you night view.

How do I do this? The only software that works for me is the Swann View. I can successfully ping the camera, but the browser will never open the Swann's utility in the camera.

You can log into the camera directly...simply type the cameras ip address into the browser..

I tried it, but it doesn't work. I ping it successfully, but it still doesn't work. I got the camera ip address from the router.

What is the ip address of the camera?
download an app called fing for your cell...it will find not only the ip address but also give you the http port which is what you need here.

The 9000 port is the media port as you point out and is not the same as the http port..what model swann is this?

Ok the 815 is not a hikision clone... You should be able to log into it by typing in your IP address followed by the port number

Hello

1) for a nightvision good image, before you bought the camera, please look at the specficiation of leds. it is most important with led for night vision. The dia bigger and more leds, the night vision would be better.
2) to select the resolution 1mp to 2mp.
3) for a 24 hours recording, I recommend you to use a NVR for recording, it is more stable and easy
