Hi all,

Finally looking to install a camera system for my home and need some suggestions/assistance. I have a Synology DS412+ NAS with 10TB+ of redundant storage so I'd like to use that along with IP cameras (as opposed to other standards). I planned for about 6 cameras (all outdoors) and was thinking 3 fixed and 3 vari-focal (possibly 1 PTZ as well). I've talked with some dealers in the area and one has KT&C cameras (http://www.ktncusa.com/) and said they were just like HikVision and would work with Synology (though I didn't see it on the Synology compatibility list). Here are my questions:

- Does anyone know if KT&C cameras are compatible with Synology?
- Can you recommend some good options for fixed, vari-focal and PTZ cameras that are dome style?
- Any recommendations for a good POE switch to use?
- Any South Florida installers that could be recommended to do the CAT6 cable runs and possibly camera hookups as well (I can do the configuration and camera hookups if needed. Most dealers don't seem to want to work with IP-cameras and/or systems that are not theirs such as Synology)? I have the CAT6 cabling.
- Any other tips?

Thanks in advance! There are quite a bit of options out there and would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Treat that as a red flag against that model of camera.
You really can't go wrong with Hikvision or Dahua cameras - much of this forum is about those, so some reading will provide lots of practical information and use cases.
And are you sure you want to spend the per-camera licence fee for the Synology SS app?

Remember Synology suppports ONVIF. I have an my Impotx mini, speed dome and Longse S500 working fine and dandy with SS 7.1.

Thank you both for the replies.

I agree that it would be best to go with cameras on the compatibility list such as HikVision. Regarding licenses for the SS app, you get two built in and 4 additional would be $200 which is far less than having to purchase a separate NVR with hard drives.

It will be cheaper to buy the NVR if you start adding more cams. I have 8 on my 214play and it was cheaper to buy the NVR but I just stuck with what I knew.

You bring up a valid point, LeeH, in comparing the Synology Surveillance Station to an NVR. How do they compare not just in terms of price but also in terms of featureset? Would all NVRs need to have their own local storage with hard drives cutting my existing Synology completely out of the solution or could some NVRs take advantage of mapped storage on the Synology? Having to add 2 quality 4TB NAS hard drives alone would be $300 aside from the cost of the NVR. 6 additional Surveillance Station licenses is $300 as well. My Synology model can apparently support up to 20 total cameras which is more than enough.
