Hey everyone,

Recently moved into a new home where the previous owner has an old hikvision system installed. Hardrive needs to be replaced and cameras do not meet my needs so I have been watching review upon review, researching everything from sensor size to megapixels and i find myself turning in circles as do what I want/need.

Here is are quick lists of my environment, needs and wants

Environment:
  • 6 POE camers already installed and I would like to use the same location to prevent running new wires and leaving exposed holes in cladding. ( I know they are installed relatively high)
  • Will be adding a video doorbell to the front door to get a lower angle to the street which will help identify if need be.
  • Soffit lights are installed to give plenty of light at night (close proximity to building)
  • There is a forest in the yard which can be a potential entry point (circled in red)

Needs:
  • The biggest need would be to DETECT, mainly the forest at the back. I would want to set up a "trip wire" push notification to my phone if anyone is spoted.
  • Identify cars at the front of home
  • I was thinking of installed a seconday wifi flood light camera at the rear of my shed to help iluminate the forest if someone is spotted.

Wants (not necessary but preffered)
  • I feel like having a camera with active deterance would "help"
  • I would like for all the equipment (cameras, doorbell, flood light) to be from the same brand

I know that i do not have a long list of needs and a 100$ wifi camera can easily fit my needs seeing that i do not need to identity in dark envirements. However I do not want to come across a situation where I wish a had invested the money once.

Any of your adive or recomendations is appreciated.

Cheers

How far is the forest from where the camera would be mounted?
Identify cars at the front of home
Are you talking about cars that are driving by or in your driveway?
I was thinking of installed a seconday wifi flood light camera at the rear of my shed to help iluminate the forest if someone is spotted.
I would use a motion light, dusk to dawn light, or a light on a switch before a WiFi camera as they are not that great.

Empire Tech just released the ColorPRO camera that has these features.
I would like for all the equipment (cameras, doorbell, flood light) to be from the same brand
Empiretech01.com is where the majority of people on here buy their equipment from. It is Dahua cameras with Empire Techs name. Great equipment and a great guy to deal with, Andy.

I would definitely research cameras before buying some and find out you wish you would have been more strategic to begin with.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Fence would start at around 50ft (+/- 75ft diagonal from camera) and i would ideally need to detect them within the first 15 ft of fence.

both in driveway and directly in front of home on street.

Seeing that it is a forest I do not want the motion to set off for no reason and disturb the wildlife and neighbors. It would be installed 10-15 feet away from the detect zone and I would only like for it to turn on when someone is present to further help the main cameras. I do not need it to Identify as I am aware that they tend to be sub par and somewhat of a gimmic.

I've been reading around to forum for a while and everyone has nothing but good to say about andy! I have been looking at his website however there is so much to chose from and it can be a little overwhelming for a newbie like me.

At that distance you would either want the z4e or z12e. You may also want a 54IR-ZE-S3 as an overview cam of the backyard.
both in driveway and directly in front of home on street.
I have one camera 54IR-ZE-S3 I use to overlook strictly my driveway that way I get good identification there. You may be able to aim that camera towards the street some and catch cars. I personally have a camera that is strictly for the street.

Unless you have a bunch of lighting in your backyard, you will have to run IR and that little extra light won’t help the camera. The camera will have no issue detecting at night if it is setup properly!

I run a NVR with built in POE super easy to setup and it can do pretty much anything a homeowner would want. I would say the popular cameras are the z12e (long distance monitoring/license plate reading), z4e ( shorter monitoring than z12e but longer than 54IR-ZE-S3/license plate reading), 54IR-ZE-S3 ( most popular/ it is varifocal so you can dial it in how you want it), Color 4k (need a bunch of outdoor light at night for this camera to work/no IR)

Welcome!

To help narrow down the choices, see this thread for the commonly recommended cameras (along with Amazon links) based on distance to IDENTIFY that represent the overall best value in terms of price and performance day and night. You will see the ones recommended above make this list.

The Importance of Focal Length over MP in camera selection

It is good you recognize motion activated lights can cause issues with IDENTIFY as most here find that cameras and motion activated floodlights ends up causing problems with image exposure and are bad for surveillance cameras. What happens is then the camera is momentarily blinded and you lose the ideal capture when the lights kick on and the camera adjusts from basically no light to a lot of light.

Further, motion activated lights are not a deterrent. There are enough videos here showing that perps do not flinch when a floodlight turns on. They avoid homes all lit up, so go with floodlights on all night.

Watch this video someone posted and how the floodlight comes on and they don't even flinch. But then the audio comes on and they don't know which way to run LOL.

Either keep the lights on all night or not at all to ensure the best chance of capture. As @camdensnyder points out, the piddly white lights on these cameras will not greatly assist your other cameras.

Here is usually what happens when a motion activated floodlight comes on - it just about completely blinds the camera right at the moment of optimal opportunity to get the picture. There are 3 deer in this picture and two of them are lost in the blinded white while the camera's exposure adjusts to the rapid change in available light:

Just out of curiosity why not spend a few dollars more and get the T58IR-ZE-S3?
Is there a difference that I'm not seeing? Will the extra MP hurt the performance?

See my thread above about not to chase MP.

The 58IR is on the same sensor as the 54IR, so it needs more light.

The 8MP will be better during the day, while the 4MP will be better during the night.

So unless you have a ton of light or do not care about low light performance, go with the 4MP.

For most we want a camera that performs in its worse situation, which would be the low light middle of the night perp.

Yes, that 1/1.8cmos is the best for the money if have good budget, and we have real warranty and support local support and warranty, and catch the time to buy something during the sales.
